SPANISH FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONALS/ DINNER LECTURE SERIES AT MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY

Monmouth University’s Marjorie K. Unterberg School of  Nursing and Health Studies, The Center for Professional Development in Nursing and Health, will present a twelve hour Spanish for Health Professionals course during March, April, and May.

Twelve contact hours will be provided.  The Center for Professional Development in Nursing and Health is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the New Jersey State Nurses Association, an accredited approver, by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.  Provider number: P242-4/09-12. 

This course is designed to expand basic Spanish conversational skills to enhance vocabulary used in the healthcare setting. Thematic conversational practice will focus on the medical history, health and medical scenarios. Key terms that are used in medical and informational forms will be highlighted.  The course will be taught primarily in Spanish and a light dinner will be served.

Topics will include:

  • Vocabulary related to the clinical setting
  • Medical procedures and clinical terminology
  • Cultural competency
  • Mock medical history interviews

It is recommended that the participant have some basic knowledge of Spanish.

Presenter:Dr. Sevi Avigdor was born in Lima Peru and earned his medical degree from the Complutense University of Madrid Medical School in Spain.   He has served as the Chief of at Gastrointestinal Surgery at Monmouth Medical Center and currently has a private practice in Long Branch NJ. Dr. Avigdor has taught Spanish for Healthcare providers for a number of years, noting that the challenges faced by the Spanish speaking population heighten the need for improved communication strategies.
