How Monmouth helped me achieve my goals

Chelsea doesn't necessarily attribute her success to a single professor or course from her MU days, but she strongly believes that her experiences attending classes and working with faculty helped to prepare her for the "real world" and for her success at Discovery Data.

"The more intimate class sizes enabled me to interact with my peers and professors without feeling intimidated. They also helped me to build relationships and friendships that enhanced my learning, many of which I maintain to this day."

Chelsea explains that the ability to interact so closely with her professors prepared her for life beyond the classroom.

"I appreciate that the majority of, if not all of, my professors were able to share their business experiences and use them as real-world case studies relating to classroom topics. Teaching practices like this helped me to quickly adapt to a business environment."

And while there isn't a specific professor or class that Chelsea pinpoints as leading to success, one project stands out as a defining moment of her MU experience. As part of her Information Technology minor, Chelsea and a small team of her peers were tasked with developing and building a Web site for a local contractor. She was named project manager for the assignment.

"This put me out of my comfort zone," she recounts, "but, it made me want to work my hardest-not only for myself and my team, but for my very first client."

This project, she notes, still resonates with her everyday responsibilities at Discovery Data.

"At Discovery Data, I've implemented numerous Web site redesigns and launches. Our marketing team maintains, codes, and works to execute the latest design and search engine optimization tactics. This, in turn, generates new business opportunities and provides a gateway for thousands of users who log into our Web application."

Why I'm proud of Monmouth

Chelsea also plays another equally important role for the company-one that honors where and how her career began.

Since completing both her undergraduate study in Business Administration (2005) and her graduate work in Finance (2008), Chelsea has maintained strong ties with the MU community in hopes of paying forward the same professional advancement opportunities that helped her find success. Following her lead, many of Chelsea's colleagues have developed the same rapport with the University, a relationship that has both helped to launch and advance the careers of Monmouth students while growing Discovery Data.

It should come as no surprise that more than half of Discovery Data's employees are Monmouth alums and that dozens of MU students have interned with the company over the years, building and sharpening their skill sets and résumés, just as Chelsea did a decade ago.

Like so many other Monmouth alums, it's a point of pride for Chelsea to be giving back to the MU community, helping stars align for the next generation.
