Monmouth University Professor Co-Edits Book on Today’s College Students

Dr. Pietro A. Sasso, assistant professor of student affairs and college counseling at Monmouth University, and Joseph L. DeVitis, retired professor of education at Old Dominion University, have co-edited a new book, Today’s College Students: A Reader.

This book looks at a wide variety of student groups and identities on college campuses and explores the connection between extra-curricular campus activities and learning.

Sasso and DeVitis seek to inspire those within higher education to redefine the paradigm of student development through outlining the complexity of the contemporary college student body within the United States. The book includes chapters on service-learning, outdoor adventure, and issues of equality in gender and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) populations.

“The higher education landscape is very complex, and Sasso and DeVitis provide a primer on today’s college students that has great breadth and depth,” said Dr. Scott C. Brown, associate vice president and dean of students at Colgate University. “Higher education professionals and anyone with an interest in contemporary post-secondary education will appreciate this rich exploration of student identity, diversity, equity and campus life.”

“This will be the first textbook to profile the spectrum of diversity of today’s college students, and it is my hope this will facilitate grassroots change,” said Sasso, who has taught at Monmouth University since 2012.

Sasso has over a decade of experience in postsecondary education in both student affairs and academic areas. His research focuses on identity construction and college student development outcomes. The text includes chapters co-authored by several Monmouth University graduate students and faculty from the University’s Student Affairs and College Counseling program.
