West Long Branch, NJ (August 8, 2013) Monmouth University’s School of Science Summer Research Program (SRP) has been under way for the past ten weeks. Now in its fifth year, the SRP enables students to work on collaborative research projects under the supervision of School of Science faculty and staff. Student researchers are carrying out exciting original research in a range of disciplines including biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, nanotechnology, software engineering, homeland defense and emergency preparedness, and watershed management.
The SRP Symposium will be held on Tuesday, August 13 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Erlanger Gardens on the Monmouth University campus. At the symposium, students will be presenting their research in poster-format presentations. Members of the public are welcome to attend the symposium.
Dean of the School of Science Michael Palladino stated: “The Summer Research Program provides students with invaluable research experience and helps to support an intellectual community of faculty teacher–scholars. Participating in a research experience as a student can be one of the most important factors that impacts future career choice. Research experience is also a key determining factor for acceptance into graduate and professional programs, and for employment in the sciences. We are thrilled to have these outstanding students on campus this summer to collaborate with our faculty on research. I encourage members of the community to join us for our end of summer Symposium to speak with our students about their work.”
268 students from throughout the United States applied to the 2013 program which accepted 84 students including undergraduate and graduate students from Monmouth University, and students from area colleges and universities including Cornell University, Carnegie Mellon University, Franklin and Marshall College, Mercer County Community College, Notre Dame, Princeton, Rutgers University, Spellman College, and Villanova.
High school students from High Technology High School, Howell High School, Marine Academy of Science and Technology, and Ocean Township High School are also involved in the program. Students have been working on research projects in wet laboratory, computer laboratory, and field research environments.
Monmouth University President Paul R. Brown said, “This outstanding program provides students from Monmouth University and other prestigious universities and high schools an opportunity to work directly with our brilliant faculty members and conduct research themselves.”
Corporate sponsors of the 2013 SRP include Bristol-Myers Squibb, Defined Logic, Discovery Data, Elusys Therapeutics, Inc., Garden State Veterinary Specialists, Global Essence, Inc. and Red Bank Veterinary Hospital.
