  • Financial Aid Process

    1. The 2012-2013 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) may be completed online at as early as January 1. However, we recommend preparing your 2011 federal tax return prior to completing the FAFSA in order to take advantage of the IRS data retrieval process. The IRS data retrieval process transfers income information directly from the IRS to the FAFSA, further streamlining your application and, possibly, reducing or eliminating the amount of documentation required.

    2. Monmouth University will prepare an individualized financial aid package for you. Your financial aid package will be communicated to you via a financial aid award letter. To assist you in your review of the award letter, an informational sheet called, "Next Steps to Complete the Financial Aid Process" will be enclosed. Review the award letter, accept or decline the aid offered, sign the award letter, and return it to the Financial Aid Office.

    3. Your application may be selected for review by either the federal or state government. In the event that the federal government has selected your application for verification, Monmouth University will request additional documentation, which should be returned promptly to the University. The state government will contact you with a separate request for documentation, which should be returned to the state. Should you receive requests for additional documentation, it is essential that you respond because your financial aid cannot be finalized until you have done so.

    4. If federal Direct Stafford Loans have been included in your financial aid package, you will need to complete an electronic master promissory note (MPN) and entrance counseling. Instructions for completion of these tasks will be mailed and e-mailed to students beginning in early June. Additionally, you can access the entrance counseling from the University’s Web site. It is imperative that you complete both the MPN and the counseling session, as loan funds cannot be credited to your account until you have done so.
