Artivism – Call for Entries
As a universal language, the arts have always been an effective tool for addressing social issues. Artivism or “activist art” is a form of social protest that explores cultural and political concerns. However, it is much more than just an innovative tactic, Artivism involves an entire a practice that attempts to inspire positive change in society. Monmouth University’s Center for the Arts is inviting artists to submit works of art that employ spectacle, symbolism and collective participation to fight for issues of social justice including racial discrimination, gender equality, fair labor practices, human rights and more. This includes, but is not limited to: conceptual social sculpture, political poems, utopian films and videos, political rally posters and paintings of “Exuberant Politics.
Art+Autism Call for Entries
This juried exhibition will showcase the talents and abilities of artists living with Autism Spectrum Disorder and continue the conversation about the unique power of art in the autism community. Select pieces of work will be for sale and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Autism Program Improvement Project at Monmouth University’s School of Education.
Algorithms in Art
Innovative creator and technologist Weili Shi will take the floor as he speaks about his one-of-a-kind project, Shan Shui in the World . Shi has taken the artistic realm by storm with his transformative work, which takes the mathematics behind New York City's most iconic buildings and turns them into beautiful Chinese shanshui (landscape) paintings. As Shi explains, the project builds a bridge between "urban life and people's yearning for the nature, and between social responsibility and spiritual purity."
From Bop to Pop
Hosted inside the refurbished Pollak Theatre, the 7:30 p.m. event transforms the flagship stage at Monmouth into a street corner in "the old neighborhood" - those magical, mythical places in the boroughs of New York, the working-class cities of New Jersey, and beyond; where a generation of passionate young singers put aside their differences, raised their voices in harmony, and gave birth to an exhilaratingly human sound called Doo Wop.
‘The Judaism of a Feminist’ Poet Alicia Ostriker to Speak at Monmouth U
In the beginning, for Alicia Suskin Ostriker, there was the word. She began writing poetry as a child, and at 80 she is still using her words to capture and convey life’s truths, its spirituality and sensuality, and the urgent calls of social justice.
