Jill Kerwick lives on a farm in Red Bank and Costa Rica in the winter. She graduated from NYU with an MA in Fine Arts (1995) and received her BFA from Moore College of Art, Phila, PA. (1978)
“I use memory and drawing as a starting point. There is some fleeting moment or feeling that I want to explore. An open ended moment of wonder. After a pencil sketch, I do some research for color and reference. I am not interested in a factual reality, more like a feeling of that moment. Sometimes I use figures or colors from art history. I want to hold on to a playful innocence, so I don’t censor myself. It can also be about what I “want” to happen. I like painting that has an observational component, but has its own life as a painting.”
Jill works in oils on linen, acryla gouache on paper or linen and photography. “Whatever medium likes me at the moment.” Her favored subjects include journeys and humorous human and animal situations. She has attended the Vermont Studio Center and Anderson Ranch, CO. She was accepted into the Cuttyhunk Island residency and will be going in September.
