My Way: A Musical Tribute to Frank Sinatra presented by Shadow Lawn Stage

A swinging tribute to Ol’ Blue Eyes, My Way: A Musical Tribute to Frank Sinatra relives Sinatra’s legendary career as four actors take you on a musical revue spanning the breadth of his career from his early beginnings as a crooner in New York, to the bright lights of Las Vegas with the Rat Pack, to his final performances. Conceived by David Grapes and Todd Olson, My Way invites its audience to take a trip down memory lane while reliving Sinatra’s remarkable five-decade career the 1950s to the1990s. From a songbook of over 1300 tunes, My Way chooses fifty-four of Sinatra’s songs that include “Fly Me to the Moon,” “Chicago,” “New York, New York,” and “That’s Life.” It’s a celebration just as Ol’ Blue Eyes would have wanted it – a few stories, a few drinks, and plenty of knockout tunes.

The play is set in the backyard of two adjoining houses in the working class neighborhood of South Philadelphia. They are about to celebrate the 21st birthday of Francis Geminiani, a Harvard student, when two classmate friends from Harvard and Yale, Judith and Randy, show up unexpectedly. Since there isn’t a spare bedroom in either house they pitch a tent in the backyard. Francis’ classmates, the wealthy Judith seeks romance with Francis not realizing that her brother Randy is the object of Francis’ unexpressed affection. Each of the characters in the play are dysfunctional to some degree and their celebration of Francis’ birthday brings out the best of comedy and drama. The birthday party is a series of comic incidents that provide laughter and serious realizations that lead up to the final joyous ending. The crazy fast moving celebration leaves each character a bit wiser and happier having celebrated Francis’ 21st birthday.

Songwriters By The Sea

Joe D’Urso and Joe Rapolla return with their Songwriters by the Sea series for an evening of intimate, relaxed and inspired round-robins. This is a rare opportunity to see and hear a unique collection of very special guest artists that in the past has included, Marshall Crenshaw, Allison Moorer, Garland Jeffreys, Joe Grushecky, John Eddie, Willie Nile and many others, in an intimate and interactive forum. What started out as a coffee shop show for area songwriters to casually perform with other writers and is now a main feature of the Light of Day Festival in Asbury Park has quickly evolved into an international series featuring some of the top songwriters in music today. The show will also feature Monmouth University student openers. The net proceeds will support Monmouth University’s Music Industry Endowed Scholarship.
