Fifty years ago, a pivotal era altered rock and roll forever. From the moment David Bowie introduced Ziggy Stardust to the world, people’s lives were changed, doors were opened to new ways of expression, and the zeitgeist was shook in ways we’re still feeling today. And then, a little over a year later—to the world’s surprise—Bowie buried Ziggy once and for all.
In these three virtual course, taught by Andrew Womack, students will travel in time across this year-long period bookended by two seminal albums: 1972’s “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars” and 1973’s “Aladdin Sane.” In between—through concert footage and television appearances, news articles and public acclaim (and often, derision), and, of course, the music—we’ll experience how Ziggy refracted and reflected popular and underground culture.
