The Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD

El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego

On May 30, the Metropolitan Opera’s 2025–26 Live in HD season comes to a close with a live
transmission of American composer Gabriela Lena Frank’s first opera, a magical-realist portrait of Mexico’s painterly power couple Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, with libretto by Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Nilo Cruz. Fashioned as a reversal of the Orpheus and Euridice myth, the story depicts Frida, sung by leading mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard, leaving the underworld on the Day of the Dead and reuniting with Diego, portrayed by baritone Carlos Álvarez.

Alongside 50 paintings by Sargent sit stunning items of clothing and accessories worn by his subjects, drawing the audience into the artist’s studio.

Waves Across Time

At the meeting of ocean and bay, Sandy Hook stands as a landscape shaped by centuries of change — a place where tides and time weave together the echoes of history and the spirit of renewal. Once a critical coastal battlement, fortified with gun batteries and vigilant officers, Sandy Hook has transformed into a sanctuary: a refuge for wildlife, beach-goers, and the ever-shifting dunes themselves, and home to research and educational facilities. What was once a place of defense is now a place of discovery and restoration — where weathered concrete yields to wildflowers, and a historic lighthouse guides not warships, but families seeking the timeless solace of the shore.
