What is the Purpose of Writing Services?

The purpose of Writing Services is to provide writing assistance to Monmouth University students and employees at all stages of the writing process, from brainstorming ideas and writing drafts to reviewing documentation styles and polishing the final revision. We offer a nurturing environment to help foster the growth of writers of all levels. It is our goal to help students develop writing skills they can use independently.

Where is Writing Services?

Writing Services is located in the lower level of the Rebecca Stafford Student Center.

When are Writing Services available?

Writing Services is open for appointments in our CSS location on Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. We also offer Write at Night evening tutoring in the Monmouth University Library on Sunday through Thursday from 5:15 p.m. to 9 p.m., as well as on Saturday from 12:30 to 5:00 p.m.

Is Writing Services free?

Yes, tutoring at Writing Services is free for Monmouth University students and alumni.

How do I schedule an appointment?

Does Writing Services see walk-ins?

Writing Services often accommodates walk-ins. However, we encourage you to make an appointment using Accudemia to ensure that appropriate-level Writing Assistants are available. See our instructions for using Accudemia.

How do I cancel an appointment?

To cancel an appointment, log in to Accudemia. Your scheduled appointment will appear on the screen. Simply click on the date of your appointment, and then click delete or reschedule. You may also cancel by calling Writing Services at 732-571-7542. Please be sure to cancel all appointments in advance. If you do not cancel in advance and have three no-show appointments, you will be limited to walk-in appointments for the remainder of the semester.

Who will be assisting me?

Our Writing Assistants (WAs) include undergraduate and graduate students, workplace professionals, and faculty members from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines. All Writing Assistants are thoroughly trained prior to working with any student or employee writers. We encourage you to try different Writing Assistants so that you may find one who best meets your needs.

How long is a Writing Services session?

A single session is 30 minutes, and a double session is 60 minutes. As a general rule, 2-3 page papers require a single session; 4 page or longer papers require a double session. To schedule a double session using Accudemia, simply repeat the procedure for scheduling a single session and select the next half-hour session.

What do I need to bring with me to a session?

You should bring the assignment instructions and any notes, outlines, or rough drafts you have started. We provide assistance with all stages of the writing process, including brainstorming ideas, organizing and outlining, writing drafts, revising, reviewing documentation styles, editing, and proofreading of the final revision. You should bring materials appropriate to the areas of writing you want to cover during the session.

What should I expect during a writing session?

Initially, the Writing Assistant (WA) will discuss your assignment with you. The WA will then assist with those areas of concern to you. If you bring in just your assignment sheet, the WA will assist you with brainstorming, organizing your ideas, and identifying your main points. If you bring in your notes, the WA will work with you to create an outline for your paper. If you bring in a draft paper, the WA will read your paper with you, ask for clarification in some areas and offer suggestions in others, and work collaboratively with you to revise the paper. The role of the WA is as a facilitator to guide and coach you in order to help you achieve a clear expression of your ideas and sharpen your overall writing skills.

Will the Writing Assistant proofread my paper?

No, your Writing Assistant (WA) will not proofread or edit your paper. Your WA will, instead, work with you to review your paper and provide you with writing assistance. Our goal is to help you become a better editor of your own work. If you are working on a longer paper, you may need to schedule multiple sessions.

Will Writing Services notify my Professor about my session?

Your Writing Assistant will ask you if you want your professor to receive a report of the tutoring session. If so, we will send a session report to your professor. Otherwise, your session will remain confidential.

Will my Writing Services sessions count toward my Athletic study hall hours?

Yes, your athletic study hall director is able to see the time you have spent at Writing Services, and those hours will count toward your required athletic study hall hours.

What online resources are available for graduate students?

Online tutoring is available exclusively for graduate students. Graduate students may send papers via eCampus to Writing Services, where a Writing Assistant will provide feedback and return the document via e-mail within 72 hours. While the best option is to come to Writing Services for face-to-face sessions, online tutoring offers an alternative to graduate students who are unavailable during the center’s hours or are otherwise unable to get to campus.

To access Online Writing Services, simply log in to eCampus under “Quick Links” on the left-hand side of this page. Once you are logged in to eCampus, click on the link to Online Writing Services located under the “Communities” heading at the bottom of your screen.
