It coordinates the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/clonet\/\">Coastal Lakes Community Observing Network<\/a> (CLONet), a citizen science partnership with municipalities and community groups dedicated to understanding the causes of environmental problems facing seaside lakes in Monmouth County. Through the work of Endowed Professor of Marine Science Jason Adolf and Community Science Coordinator Erin Conlon, the UCI is engaged in several efforts to study the threats posed to coastal ecosystems by factors such as harmful algal blooms, water pollution, marine debris and sediment contamination.<\/p>\n<p>The UCI maintains three <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/uci\/research-equipment-field-activities\/\">research vessels, equipment and technologies<\/a> used to monitor water quality in the region. For several years, the UCI operated a network of eight real-time water quality monitoring stations in the northern estuaries of New Jersey in collaboration with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, Barnegat Bay Partnership, Monmouth County Board of Health, local and regional watershed management groups, and other partners.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Resources and Recent Activities<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/uci\/2025\/07\/02\/student-analysis-of-coastal-lakes-data-finds-promise-in-floating-wetlands-fish-reactions-to-water-changes\/\">Monmouth students analyzed CLONet data<\/a> to determine how green infrastructure projects have impacted water quality and what eDNA collected from the waters shows are the most common fish living in two lakes. (July 2025)<\/li>\n<li>Monmouth University researchers studying the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/uci\/2023\/08\/09\/monmouth-university-study-finds-rain-driven-microbial-pollution-persists-at-surfing-beaches-in-colder-months\/\">influence of weather and ocean conditions on microbial pollution<\/a> found that within 6-24 hours of moderate rainfall, enterococcus bacteria levels exceeded state health safety standards about half the time at these beaches. (August 2023)<\/li>\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/uci\/2023\/01\/11\/study-deal-lake-caught-in-seasonal-cycle-of-harmful-algal-blooms\/\">Monmouth University-led study<\/a> probed a seasonal cycle responsible for harmful algal blooms in Deal Lake (January 2023).<\/li>\n<li>The UCI coordinates a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/clonet\/\">Coastal Lakes Community Observing Network<\/a> (CLONet) that partners Monmouth faculty and student researchers with community residents to monitor the health of local lakes. With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/uci\/2021\/07\/08\/monmouth-university-awarded-grant-to-monitor-health-of-countys-coastal-lakes-through-2023\/\">grant support<\/a> from the Jules L. Plangere, Jr. Family Foundation, the project will continue through 2023.<\/li>\n<li>Monmouth received a $127,600 grant from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/uci\/2022\/02\/17\/monmouth-u-to-monitor-deal-sunset-lake-conditions-as-part-of-statewide-probe-of-harmful-algal-bloom-causes\/\">to monitor Sunset and Deal lakes<\/a> as part of a study of factors driving cyanobacterial harmful algal bloom formation in New Jersey lakes. (February 2022)<\/li>\n<li>Endowed Associate Professor of Marine Science Jason Adolf <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/uci\/2021\/01\/13\/adolf-to-lead-governors-harmful-algal-bloom-expert-team\/\">has been selected<\/a> to lead a Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) Expert Team formed to provide guidance to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection on HAB prevention, mitigation and management for the state\u2019s lakes and other waterbodies. (January 2021)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>COASTAL WATER QUALITY<br \/>\n Real-Time Monitoring Program<\/p>\n<p> The Urban Coast Institute is operating a network of eight long-term, near real-time water quality monitoring stations in the northern estuaries of New Jersey in collaboration with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Bureau of Marine Water Monitoring (NJDEP BWM), Barnegat Bay Partnership, Monmouth County Board of Health, local and regional watershed management groups, and other partners.<br \/>\n The Continuous Monitoring Stations utilize the YSI 6600 Multiparameter Data Sonde. The sensors include a Clark-type Rapid Pluse YSI 6562 DO probe or\u00a0a YSI 6150 ROX\u00a0 Optical DO probe, a YSI 6560 conductivity\/temperature probe, a 6561 pH probe, a 6136 turbidity probe, and a 6025 chlorophyll probe.<br \/>\n Each is equipped with the Clean Sweep Extended Deployment System (EDS), which is comprised of a brush that sweeps across the sensors at set intervals to dislodge any fouling organisms or material that has settled on the sensors.
