The UCI also recognizes that communities of color and environmental justice communities bear a disproportionate share of the burden of marine pollution, coastal storms and sea level rise, as well as uneven access to and distribution of benefits from the ocean. In order to support an ocean that will thrive and benefit future generations, we need to design more ambitious and inclusive solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UCI is dedicated to breaking down barriers across areas of inquiry and working with diverse communities to answer pressing questions about marine justice. Frank Pallone secured $625,000<\/a> for Monmouth University to support vessel research in waters around Sandy Hook with the participation of students from around the U.S. interning with the Inclusive NOAA Fisheries Internship Program. Monmouth and the UCI host the IN FISH program <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/uci\/2023\/06\/15\/uci-hosts-noaa-inclusive-fisheries-internship-program-research-cruise\/\">on its campus and assist in organizing field activities<\/a> for participants. (May 2024)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>UCI Communications Director Karl Vilacoba worked with tribal entities and the Mid-Atlantic Regional Council on the Ocean (MARCO) to develop an <a href=\"https:\/\/portal.midatlanticocean.org\/news\/introducing-the-indigenous-nations-communities-cultures-map-collection\/\">Indigenous Nations, Communities and Cultures map collection<\/a> on the Mid-Atlantic Ocean Data Portal. <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/hRwIus0muUg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">View his presentation at the 2023 Mid-Atlantic Ocean Forum<\/a>. (May 2023)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>UCI Ocean Policy Fellow Paul G. Gaffney II is a member of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/uci\/2020\/09\/14\/gaffney-named-to-national-academies-committee-tasked-with-advancing-defense-research-at-hbcus-and-msis\/\">Committee on Defense Research at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) and other Minority Serving Institutions (MSI)<\/a>. Gaffney, a retired Navy vice admiral, and the committee examined the methods and means necessary to advance research capacity at those institutions <a href=\"https:\/\/nap.nationalacademies.org\/catalog\/26399\/defense-research-capacity-at-historically-black-colleges-and-universities-and-other-minority-institutions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in this report<\/a>. (December 2022)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The UCI and Institute for Global Understanding hosted the online panel talk &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/uci\/2022\/03\/09\/diversity-equity-inclusion-and-ocean-justice-webinar\/\">Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Ocean Justice<\/a>&#8221; in March 2022.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A multidisciplinary team of Monmouth researchers launched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/uci\/2021\/08\/10\/paradoxical-paradise-shares-asbury-parks-african-american-history-through-multimedia-archival-documents\/\">Paradoxical Paradise<\/a>, an online library of archival materials, GIS maps, podcasts and other multimedia chronicling Asbury Park&#8217;s African American history. (August 2021)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>UCI Communications Director Karl Vilacoba profiled three women at the core of Black in Marine Science&#8217;s success for the Mid-Atlantic Ocean Data Portal&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/portal.midatlanticocean.org\/ocean-stories\/group-aims-to-make-field-more-diverse-provide-guidance-for-young-practitioners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ocean Stories<\/a>.&#8221; (April 2021)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/portal.midatlanticocean.org\/\">Mid-Atlantic Ocean Data Portal<\/a> project team, the UCI regularly provides trainings for users of all needs, including annual sessions designed to instruct New York City public school teachers to use the site as a classroom tool.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/uci\/2020\/12\/22\/student-film-explores-climate-gentrification-threat-history-of-redlining-in-asbury-parks-west-side\/\">short documentary<\/a> created by student London Jones examines the possibility that climate gentrification could one day push minorities from Asbury Park\u2019s West Side community. The project builds on her UCI-supported research <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/uci\/2020\/09\/22\/student-papers-examine-discriminatory-barriers-to-beach-access-climate-threats-to-right-whales\/\">discriminatory barriers to beach access<\/a> in Asbury Park and other New Jersey municipalities. (December 2020)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The UCI issued a special call for proposals to support faculty\/student research and community-based projects focused on sustainably rebuilding coastal communities and economies after the pandemic while addressing impacts to and needs of our most vulnerable populations. Heidi Lynn Sculthorpe Faculty Enrichment Grants <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/uci\/2020\/11\/16\/uci-awards-grants-for-projects-that-support-research-socially-vulnerable-communities-in-time-of-covid-19\/\">were awarded<\/a> for projects that will study COVID-19\u2019s impacts on the African American community in Asbury Park, New Jersey, and create Little Free Library installations in low-income coastal communities.
