School of Science to Host Ninth Annual Summer Research Symposium Featuring Results of Faculty/Student Collaboration

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Monmouth University School of Science will hold a symposium to present findings from its 2017 Summer Research Program (SRP). The event will be held on Thursday, Aug. 10, 2017 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Erlanger Gardens. In case of rain or excessive heat, the event will be held indoors in the atrium of Edison Hall, room 201.

Each year, the School of Science invites students to participate in a 12-week research experience in which they work on collaborative research projects with faculty and staff. The program is open to both graduate and undergraduate students. Some faculty research mentors also will work with high school students and incoming first-year Monmouth University students.

Applications for participation in the program are reviewed on a competitive basis. In recent years, less than one-third of applicants were accepted to participate.

Among the topics to be presented at this year’s SRP symposium are:

  • Trends in the Abundance and Spatial-Temporal Variations of Sharks and Rays in New Jersey Coastal Waters
  • 3D Hurricane Escape Mobile Application Using New Jersey’s Evacuation Routes
  • Use of Pomegranate Juice Extract and Apple Extract to Treat and to Inhibit Inflammation in Cancers of the Oral Cavity and Glioblastomas
  • Analysis of Excitation Energy Transfer in Pigment-Protein Complexes with PyFREC Software
  • Use of IoT (Internet of Things) Devices in Healthcare Marketing Services

This year’s SRP symposium will feature research from biology, marine and environmental biology and policy, chemistry and physics, computer science and software engineering, mathematics, and the Urban Coast Institute.
