Monmouth University President Paul R. Brown Honored by Alma Mater

The Franklin & Marshall (F&M) Alumni Association honored Monmouth University President Paul R. Brown, a member of the F&M class of 1972, with an Alumni Citation Award on June 7. The award places Brown in an elite group as a member of the college’s Society of Distinguished Alumni.

“I am honored and humbled to receive this recognition from my alma mater,” said Brown, whose daughter, Emma, is also a student at the college. “My passion for higher education was launched at F&M, and I am privileged to be able serve the academy today as president of Monmouth University.”

F&M President Daniel R. Porterfield presented the award to Brown during the college’s alumni reunion weekend. The award recognizes alumni who are distinguished in a particular profession, have provided dedicated leadership and service to the community, and have established an exemplary record of accomplishments in a specific field of endeavor.

“It’s a pleasure to celebrate the distinguished career of scholar and educator Paul Brown as he embarks on a new chapter of leadership in higher education, and it’s also been a delight to have Paul and Joan’s daughter, Emma, here at Franklin & Marshall,” Porterfield said.

Brown was recognized for his outstanding achievements and contributions to higher education. Prior to his appointment at Monmouth, Brown served as dean of the College of Business and Economics at Lehigh University. Before joining Lehigh, Brown spent more than 20 years at New York University, where he worked in administrative and academic capacities.

Joining Brown as inductees into the F&M Society of Distinguished Alumni are Joan Fallon, founder and CEO of Curemark, a biopharmaceutical company; Marc Hochberg, professor of medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine; Judith White, professor of cell biology and microbiology at the University of Virginia; and (posthumously) Victoria Ball, a career counselor at Brown University. Ball’s brother, Hiram Ball, accepted the citation on her behalf.

Brown graduated Phi Beta Kappa from F&M where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree. He received both a doctorate and a master’s degree in professional accountancy from the University of Texas at Austin.
