Gen Silent is the critically acclaimed documentary from filmmaker Stu Maddox that asks six LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) older adults if they will hide friends or spouses their entire lives in order to survive in a care system that is often oppressive, discriminatory and, at times, abusive.
This film puts a face on what social work and health care experts call an epidemic of older LGBT adults going back into “the closet” in order to receive needed services as they age. Frail, vulnerable, and often isolated, this generation who spearheaded the Gay Rights movement is dying prematurely due to the ignorance of many in the health care system and the lack of family and/or friends to provide necessary care.
The LGBT Older Adult Project, a joint initiative of Monmouth University’s School of Social Work and the School of Nursing and Health Studies, will host a FREE screening of this important documentary on:
SUNDAY, April 22 at 2 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, Asbury & Grand Ave, Asbury Park
OR
MONDAY, April 23 at 3 p.m. in Wilson Auditorium on the MU campus
After the film, the LGBT Older Adult Project, whose mission is to improve the quality of life for older LGBT persons, will host a discussion on the film with the audience and members of the Steering Committee of the project.
