The School of Science Peer Mentors are hosting their Second Annual Destress and Final Advising Event this Friday, April 24, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM in Edison Hall, Room E119 (located on the first floor near the Urban Coast Institute). Designed as a casual, drop-in opportunity for students to unwind before finals begin, the event blends last-minute academic guidance with stress relief. This event was hosted by the SOS Peer mentors (Fomo and Conor depicted) to assist students with planning out their schedules for next year and getting involved in professional opportunities, including work and research. Several students came to the event to asks for help with scheduling courses for next year. The peer mentors provided them with specific course sequence charts for their majors, assisted them with navigating the Colleague Self Service (Student Planning) website, and gave them advice about what courses to take. They also gave students advice about extracurricular endeavors, including finding research opportunities with professors on campus. Overall, students appreciated the advice from the peer mentors and believed it helped them to form an initial plan for scheduling courses about which they could ask their advisors for more clarification.<\/p>\n<\/div>\nSOS Peer Mentors’ Pre-final Advising Event<\/h3>\n\n\n\n November. 19, 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
Hello, Monmouth students. Is the thought of finals already stressing you out? If so, then consider attending the SOS Peer Mentors’ Pre-final Advising Event, during which the peer mentors will give you their best advice to prepare for finals! Final exams are no joke, but the peer mentors, having experienced the stress of finals before, will provide you with supportive and class-specific advice to help you conquer any exam or project you may have. If you want the best chance at success this semester, then attending our event is a no-brainer. <\/p>\n<\/div>These pictures feature the SOS peer mentors’ pre-final advising event, in which the mentors gave attendees advice about how they should prepare for their final exams. The peer mentors answered the questions of attendees and gave advice specific to the introductory science classes, including General Chemistry 1, Introductory Biology, and Ecology. They also discussed their experiences with upper-level classes (i.e., Organic Chemistry), informed students of supportive academic services on campus, and encouraged them to practice self-care to manage stress. There were also free snacks and drinks for attendees. The SOS peer mentors took charge of the club table at the event, talking to parents about the different clubs in the School of Science and the peer mentoring program. The peer mentors (Fomo and Conor) answered parents’ questions about the biology and computer science majors, respectively, and directed families to interact with the science departments’ professors. They also assisted with giving families tours of rooms in the Edison building. School of Science Peer Mentors Smelter Kickoff Event (Fall 2025)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n October. 1, 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
Fall Semester Kickoff hosted by the SOS peer mentors! This event is targeted towards helping students better acclimate to Monmouth University. It featured break-out groups discussing topics including academic advice, stress management, clubs & activities, and commuter involvement. The event tok place on Wednesday, October 1, from 2:30 – 4:15 PM in E201 (the Atrium).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
Below are pictures feature the SOS peer mentors’ smelter kickoff event, in which the mentors discussed academic advice, stress management, and clubs and activities. We are honored to collaborate with faculty members from Counseling and Prevention Service, offering fidget toys for students and talking about the therapy services offered at Monmouth University. There were free snacks and drinks, as well as origami models on display that were made by one of the peer mentors (Fomo). The peer mentors also shared information with freshmen students about their own prior experiences and offered advice to make the most of the time spent at Monmouth University. Overall, this event presented a fun way to advise new students at Monmouth about tips and strategies they can use to achieve their academic and professional goals at Monmouth University. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

At the end of the Spring 2025 semester the School of Science Peer Mentors collaborated to create an event for students to relieve their stress during finals week. They found that the best way to do so was to have a social event to release any of those before final nerves. This was their first event and a good opportunity for everyone to introduce themselves. At the event there was music playing while the peers freely had the option to play board games, coloring pages, and interact in an origami teaching from our very own peer mentor Fomo Wirba. Our mentors Miriam Abecasis, Amina Rabah, Izzy Torres, Conor Jacob also offered a range of refreshments to help welcome students in and make them feel comfortable in the space that they created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The event featured a variety of calming and interactive activities, including board games, coloring pages, and an origami workshop led by Peer Mentor Coordinator Fomo Wirba. Background music added to the inviting atmosphere, and a selection of refreshments was provided to help students feel welcome and at ease. This being the mentors first event also served as a valuable opportunity for mentors and students to introduce themselves and foster a sense of community within the School of Science.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
