Toward this end, our candidates are prepared to serve students from diverse backgrounds in terms of abilities, age, culture, ethnicity, family, lifestyle, and socioeconomic status. Our programs link research and practice by ensuring candidates have the opportunity to work with students, teachers, and school leaders in a wide range of local school and community settings. Finally, our programs are designed to instill a commitment to life-long learning.<br \/>\n The undergraduate programs in education require the simultaneous completion of a content major. Programs are designed to provide a strong liberal arts or sciences background, a subject area major, a behavioral\/social science sequence, and significant professional preparation for an early childhood special education teacher (P-3), an elementary teacher (K\u20135), a secondary school teacher (9-12), and as a subject area (K\u201312) teacher.<br \/>\n Students wishing to earn certification as an early childhood teacher (P-3) must simultaneously complete the requirements of the Early Childhood program with the Teacher of Students with Disabilities (TSD) endorsement and a BA program in Anthropology, English, History, Music, or Foreign Language\/Spanish concentration.<br \/>\n Students wishing to earn certification as an elementary teacher (K-5) are required to simultaneously complete the requirements of both the B.A. program in Education and one of the B.A. programs in Anthropology, Art, English, Foreign Languages\/Spanish concentration, History, History and Political Science, Music, or Political Science; or to simultaneously complete the requirements of both the B.S. program in Education and one of the B.S. programs in Biology, Chemistry, Chemistry (Physical Science), or Mathematics.<br \/>\n Those students wishing to earn certification to teach in a subject area (9-12) are required to simultaneously complete the requirements of both the B.A. program in Education and one of the B.A. programs in Art, English, Foreign Languages\/Spanish concentration, History, History and Political Science, Music, or Political Science; or to simultaneously complete the requirements of both the B.S. program in Education and one of the B.S. programs in Biology, Chemistry, Chemistry (Physical Science), or Mathematics.<br \/>\n Students who simultaneously major in Art, Music, and Foreign Languages with an Education Program can be certified to teach students in grades K-12.<br \/>\n Endorsements are available for students who wish to enhance their knowledge base, as well as to improve their marketability in today\u2019s job market. The Education endorsements include:<\/p>\n<p> Teacher of Students with Disabilities (TSD)<br \/>\n English as a Second Language (ESL)<br \/>\n Middle School (these endorsements can be combined with the Elementary Programs (K-5) in the following subjects:<br \/>\n English<br \/>\n Mathematics<br \/>\n Science<br \/>\n Social Studies<\/p>\n<p> \u00a0<\/p>\n<p> Students will have two academic advisors\u2014one in each department, Education and the program content major as described above. To qualify for certification, students must complete the professional education components and requirements of the Monmouth University School of Education, as well as the standards of the New Jersey Department of Education, and the National Specialty Professional Associations.<br \/>\n The program includes field experiences beginning in the sophomore year, increasing in intensity during the junior year, and culminating in full-time student teaching in the senior year. Students are required to maintain a 2.75 grade point average (GPA) with no grade lower than C- in a required course upon formal acceptance into the School of Education. Transfer students will have one semester of provisional status pending their attainment of a GPA of 2.75. Transfer students will be permitted to take one or two education courses as appropriate in the first semester. Transfer students may transfer a maximum of six (6) credits from a two-year institution.<br \/>\n Applications for Student Teaching must be submitted to the Office of Certification, Field Placements and School Partnerships by the end of January for fall and spring placement. At this time, students are screened to ensure that they meet the academic and professional standards required for State certification. All test requirements must be met prior to student teaching. Only official Praxis II score reports from Educational Testing Service (ETS) will be accepted for student teaching and state certification. Students seeking certification in Spanish or Chinese must provide evidence of a passing ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI). English as a Second Language (ESL) students must provide evidence of a passing ACTFL OPI and Writing Proficiency Test (WPT).
