(2024). \u00a0This sheet is to serve as a ready reference; more in-depth descriptions can be found in the handbook.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"chicago-18-general-format-information\"><strong>Chicago 18 General Format Information<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Chicago uses two basic systems of citation:<ul><li>Notes &amp; Bibliography System: used in literature, history, and the arts<\/li><\/ul><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Author-date System: used in the physical, natural, and social sciences<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask your professor which system they prefer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"notes-amp-bibliography-system\"><strong>Notes &amp; Bibliography System<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In this system, sources are acknowledged by placing a superscript number at the end of the sentence containing the quote or paraphrase. The corresponding number at the bottom of the page (footnote) or at the end of a paper (endnote) contains the full citation.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ask your professor whether they prefer footnotes or endnotes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"authordate-system\"><strong>Author-Date System<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>This system is comprised of two indispensable parts: a complete list of sources cited (Reference List), and in-text citations, usually in parentheses.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"page-format\"><strong>Page Format<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"margins\"><strong>Margins<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Margins should be set to one inch on all sides.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"line-spacing\"><strong>Line Spacing<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>The entire text, including block quotes, should be double-spaced. (Some professors prefer block-quotes single spaced.) If you are using the Notes &amp; Bibliography System, the notes and bibliography are typically single-spaced, but double-spaced between entries.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"paragraphs\"><strong>Paragraphs<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Text should be flushed left, and the first line of each paragraph should be indented one-half inch.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"spacing-between-sentences\"><strong>Spacing between Sentences<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Text should be double-spaced, with no extra space between paragraphs.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"font\"><strong>Font<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Use plain serif fonts, like 12 pt. Times New Roman.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"title-page\"><strong>Title Page<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Research papers usually require a title page (professors typically require a title page, so make sure to check with your instructor).<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"page-numbers\"><strong>Page Numbers<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Page numbers appear flushed to the right in the header of the first page of a text and of subsequent pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> The title page should NOT have a page number<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"chicago-18-sample-title-page\"><strong>Chicago 18 Sample Title Page<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-vertically-aligned-top\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 33%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\"><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"title\">Title<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Centered and about a third the way down from the top of the page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> When subtitles apply, end the title with a colon and place the subtitle on the next line<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"author-information\">Author Information<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Centered, below the title.
