Melissa Kozlowski, curator of the Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music at Monmouth University, recently appeared on \u201cThe Jazz Reel Book: 30 Albums for 30 Years\u201d podcast to discuss the Center and its role in preserving American music history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the conversation with host Jay Sweet, Kozlowski traced the Center\u2019s origins to 2001, when a group of Springsteen fans combined their personal collections of memorabilia. The collection moved to Monmouth University in 2011 and became the official repository for Springsteen\u2019s archival materials in 2017, paving the way for opening of the 30,000-square-foot Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music<\/a> this past June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n While Springsteen\u2019s life and career are central to the exhibitions, Kozlowski emphasized the Center\u2019s broader focus on American music and its influence on American life. The galleries span roughly 250 years and explore genres including jazz, blues, folk, country, classical, sacred music, and hip-hop, with artifacts from artists such as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, and Sabrina Carpenter helping tell broader stories of American history and culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The conversation also explores Springsteen\u2019s longstanding connection to the Jersey Shore. Born in Long Branch and raised in Freehold, Springsteen performed at Monmouth with his early bands and remains supportive of the Center, visiting during its development and contributing additional items from his personal collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Additionally, Kozlowski noted that the Center is developing educational programming for adults and K-12 students, including lectures, classroom programs, field trips, and eventually summer camps.
