James Pillar, Ed.D., vice president for Student Life at Monmouth University, is participating in the 2026-27 cohort of the Executive Leadership Academy (ELA)<\/a>, a year-long developmental program that prepares experienced senior cabinet officers for positions of greater responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is an honor to be selected for the Executive Leadership Academy and to join higher education leaders from across the country. I look forward to the opportunity to learn from their experiences and bring back ideas that will help Monmouth University continue its commitment to student success,\u201d Pillar said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through the program, Pillar has completed one of two seminars in Washington, D.C., led by current and former college and university presidents, as well as higher education leadership specialists, with a second session scheduled for 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participants also complete an individualized professional experience plan that expands their leadership skills and exposure to new areas of practice. The program includes executive coaching, peer-to-peer participant-led webinars, regional gatherings, and other developmental activities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

ELA is co-sponsored by the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC)<\/a>, the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU)<\/a>, and the American Academic Leadership Institute (AALI)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nominees must be submitted by the president to whom they report, with the president indicating agreement to serve as a mentor, and must currently serve in cabinet-level positions within any division of their institution. ELA cohorts are comprised of 36 participants, equally of CIC member institutions and AASCU institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pillar was named vice president for Student Life in July 2023, following a tenure at Monmouth University that began in 1995, and currently provides leadership to a variety of departments, including Counseling and Prevention Services, Residential Life, Student Engagement, and more. He earned his bachelor\u2019s degree in business management from Millersville University, an MBA from West Chester University, and a doctorate in Educational Leadership from Edgewood College (now Edgewood University).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
