{"id":40802293649,"date":"2026-04-01T08:39:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-01T12:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/news\/?p=40802293649"},"modified":"2026-04-08T11:00:58","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T15:00:58","slug":"parkins-work-wins-two-prizes-finalist-for-third","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/news\/parkins-work-wins-two-prizes-finalist-for-third\/","title":{"rendered":"Parkin&#8217;s Work Wins Two Prizes, Finalist for Third"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Katherine Parkin, Ph.D., Jules Plangere Endowed Chair in American Social History and professor in the department of History and Anthropology, recently received two prestigious awards at the <a href=\"https:\/\/thebhc.org\/2026-bhc-meeting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Business History Conference<\/a> in London, England.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parkin earned the 2025 Ralph Gomory Prize for her book, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pennpress.org\/9781512828207\/the-abortion-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Abortion Market: Buying and Selling Access in the Era Before Roe<\/a>,\u201d and the 2025 Philip Scranton Prize, for the article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/enterprise-and-society\/article\/business-of-abortion-referral-services-crossborder-consumption-and-canadian-womens-access-to-abortion-in-new-york-state-19701972\/195421D9570E49E8A2DF964056559A34#article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Business of Abortion: Referral Services, Cross-Border Consumption, and Canadian Women\u2019s Access to Abortion in New York State, 1970-1972<\/a>,\u201d which was co-authored with Sarah Elvins, Ph.D., from the University of Manitoba, and published in Enterprise and Society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the prize committee, members were \u201cextremely impressed by both the concept and execution\u201d of \u201cThe Abortion Market.\u201d They also praised the accompanying article for its \u201coriginality, conceptual clarity, and exemplary integration of business history with the histories of consumption, gender, and the state.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The committee also noted that the article \u201cstood out immediately for the precision of its argument and the sophistication with which it situates entrepreneurial activity,\u201d adding that it, \u201cis a model of how business history can engage with urgent historical questions without sacrificing analytical rigor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to these honors, \u201cThe Abortion Market\u201d was named a finalist for the organization\u2019s Hagley Prize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"5712\" height=\"4284\" style=\"object-position: 52.5325% 46.55875%\" src=\"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2026\/03\/IMG_3351.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-40802293658\" style=\"width:408px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2026\/03\/IMG_3351.jpg 5712w, https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2026\/03\/IMG_3351-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2026\/03\/IMG_3351-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2026\/03\/IMG_3351-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2026\/03\/IMG_3351-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2026\/03\/IMG_3351-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2026\/03\/IMG_3351-1320x990.jpg 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 5712px) 100vw, 5712px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Prof. Katherine Parkin accepting the Gomory Prize at the Business History Conference (Imperial College London, England, 2026)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Professor Katherine Parkin was awarded the 2025 Ralph Gomory Prize and the 2025 Philip Scranton Prize at the Business History Conference held in London, England.
