Susan M. Pattay, Ed.D, CCC-SLP, BCS-S, assistant professor in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology, recently published an article in the Journal of Allied Health<\/a> (Vol. 55, No. 1, 2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The paper, \u201cImproving Interdisciplinary Skills Training for Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES)<\/a>\u201d discusses how a national training protocol for FEES practice still does not exist for speech-language pathologists (SLPs). This variance impacts FEES training, mentorship, and opportunities for communities of practice, which are often used by physicians in endoscopic training. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her research suggests reviewing current FEES training models. According to Pattay, just as SLPs have borrowed their direct, hands-on skills for endoscopy from physician practices, the SLP profession may also want to consider the addition of learning communities for best skills practice with FEES.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Journal of Allied Health is the official publication of the Association of Schools Advancing Health Professions (ASAHP). It is the only interdisciplinary allied health periodical, publishing scholarly works related to research and development, feature articles, research abstracts, and book reviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pattay is the principal investigator for the Monmouth University Swallowing and Endoscopic (MUSE) Lab<\/a>, located within the Department of Speech-Language Pathology.
