Gary W. Lewandowski Jr., Ph.D., professor in the Department of Psychology at Monmouth University, has co-authored the second edition of \u201cIntimate Relationships<\/a>,\u201d scheduled for release on February 26, 2026, by Sage Publications. The updated edition, co-authored with Wind Goodfriend, Ph.D., addresses attraction, communication, love, sexuality, relationship development, infidelity, dissolution and relationships in the modern world while expanding coverage of diverse relationship structures and identities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lewandowski, an award-winning educator and researcher, brings a fresh perspective to the textbook, enriching it with expanded coverage of relationship science and student-centered pedagogy. His contributions include over 500 new references, and updated popular culture examples including \u201cBridgerton,\u201d Disney princess movies, queer cinema, parasocial relationships, and \u201cLove Is Blind,\u201d helping students analyze relationship dynamics through familiar cultural touchpoints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The goal was to create a book that answers the questions students have about relationships, and help them navigate their own experiences using research,” Lewandowski said. “By integrating real-world examples and inclusive content, we aim to make the science of relationships accessible, relevant, and applicable to students\u2019 lives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is new content on the risks of oversharing, adult friendships, relationships for people on the autism spectrum, jealousy, disorganized attachment style, nonmonogamous relationships, incels, virginity, sexual fluidity, dialectical theory, deception, relationships for people of color, gaslighting, relationship violence in LGBTQ+ couples, ambivalence, unrealistic beliefs, relationship breakup, invisible support, and emotional capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New instructional elements encourage students to interpret evidence, evaluate claims, and apply research insights beyond the classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The book carries strong relevance for undergraduate education, where the study of relationships often serves as an accessible entry point into psychological research. Lewandowski\u2019s scholarship supports Monmouth University\u2019s emphasis on teaching that links theory with lived experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
