{"id":40802292012,"date":"2026-01-06T12:02:22","date_gmt":"2026-01-06T17:02:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/news\/?p=40802292012"},"modified":"2026-02-20T16:56:48","modified_gmt":"2026-02-20T21:56:48","slug":"prof-parkin-publishes-on-birth-control-in-journal-of-american-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/news\/prof-parkin-publishes-on-birth-control-in-journal-of-american-history\/","title":{"rendered":"Prof. Parkin Publishes on Birth Control in Journal of Family History"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In her new article, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/03631990251399870\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Right Number of Children\u2014Emko Birth Control in Puerto Rico and the US, 1962\u20131966<\/a>,&#8221; published in the Journal of Family History, Professor Katherine Parkin, Ph.D., considers how population control ideologue Joseph Sunnen distributed his spermicidal vaginal foam Emko, first in Puerto Rico and then surreptitiously to poor and working-class women in the United States through the mail and in concert with Planned Parenthood in clinics and their workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sunnen sought to limit the country&#8217;s population by advancing an idealized American family of only one or two children. With a coordinated public relations campaign, he created the first mainstream magazine ad for birth control and placed ads in newspapers and magazines nationally to sell Americans on the benefits of having smaller families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parkin is the Jules Plangere, Jr., Endowed Chair in American Social History and professor in the department of History and Anthropology. Her recent scholarship includes &nbsp;\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pennpress.org\/9781512828207\/the-abortion-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Abortion Market: Buying and Selling Access in the Era Before Roe<\/a>,\u201d published by the University of Pennsylvania Press.
