Data science graduate student Brooke Tortorelli \u201924 and Susan H. Marshall, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Mathematics, recently co-published an article in Involve: A Journal of Mathematics, Volume 17, Number 4<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBrahmagupta Quadrilaterals Are Lattice Quadrilaterals<\/a>,\u201d generalizes a 2001 result about triangles to a special class of polygons\u2014known as Brahmagupta quadrilaterals\u2014with a method of proof combining techniques from geometry, complex numbers, and number theory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWorking alongside Dr. Marshall gave me the confidence to pursue additional research opportunities at the undergraduate and graduate levels, which will translate in my impending career in the field of data science. I will always be grateful to her for guiding me to my first professional math experience, as well as my first publication,\u201d Tortorelli said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tortorelli collaborated with Marshall on this research, which was supported by a grant from Bristol Myers Squibb, as an undergraduate student through the School of Science Summer Research Program<\/a>. They decided to continue the project once the program ended, resulting in the co-publication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a senior, Tortotelli received the Faculty Recognition Award for undergraduate research in mathematics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
