{"id":40802282147,"date":"2024-05-18T10:24:20","date_gmt":"2024-05-18T14:24:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/news\/?p=40802282147"},"modified":"2024-05-23T09:12:19","modified_gmt":"2024-05-23T13:12:19","slug":"english-majors-present-at-seton-hall-literature-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/news\/english-majors-present-at-seton-hall-literature-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"English Majors Present at Seton Hall Literature Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>English majors Olivia Frew &#8217;24, senior Breanna Guinta, Nicole Mautone &#8217;24, and Hana Vozzo &#8217;24 recently presented their research at <a href=\"https:\/\/call-for-papers.sas.upenn.edu\/cfp\/2024\/01\/04\/2024-seton-hall-english-undergraduate-literature-conference\">Seton Hall University\u2019s \u201cBoundaries and Borders&#8221; undergraduate literature conference <\/a>alongside English majors from Seton Hall, Columbia University, Baruch College, and Keene State University in New Hampshire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frew presented on \u201cMyth and Sacrifice: Haitian Womanhood in \u2018Breath, Eyes, Memory,\u2019\u201d a 1994 novel by Edwidge Danticat. Guinta presented on her departmental honors thesis research into Nathaniel Parker Willis, a mid-nineteenth-century American author once popular but now largely forgotten. Guinta was much encouraged by the audience response: \u201cI was delighted to receive from my peers and professors at Seton Hall such positive feedback on my presentation. The Seton Hall English department chair especially motivated me to continue my research and gave me some recommendations on other works to check out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mautone\u2019s paper was \u201cUltimate Weakness to Driving Force: How Religion Empowers the Vampire in&nbsp;\u2018Midnight Mass<em>.\u2019<\/em>\u201d Her paper examined the use of religion in Bram Stoker\u2019s 1897 novel \u201cDracula,\u201d&nbsp;Anne Rice\u2019s 1976 novel \u201cInterview with the Vampire,\u201d and the 2021 Netflix series&nbsp;\u201cMidnight Mass.\u201d Mautone considered herself \u201clucky to be able to watch Hana Vozzo present and to share a Q&amp;A session with her.\u201d Vozzo\u2019s presentation was on \u201cSymbolism of the Sea: An Exploration of Individual and Cultural Identity in Derek Walcott\u2019s \u2018The Schooner Flight.\u2019\u201d Best known for his poetry, in 1992 Walcott was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All four English majors are members of Monmouth University\u2019s Delta Sigma chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society, advised by BethSara Swanson, lecturer in the Department of English.
