Monmouth University’s student-run theatre club, MU Players, presented \u201cCabaret for a Cause<\/a>,\u201d their annual concert benefitting Broadway Cares\/Equity Fights AIDS<\/a> (BCEFA), in front of a sold-out crowd at Lauren K. Woods Theatre on Dec. 2. Directed by senior Annie Sacks, it was the most recent in a series of events in which Monmouth\u2019s theatre students, under the guidance of Sheri Anderson, MFA, specialist professor in the department of Music and Theatre Arts, have supported those in need in the entertainment community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c[‘Cabaret for a Cause’ is] a great way for students with all different performance backgrounds to get together and raise money for an amazing cause,\u201d said Sacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this semester, Monmouth\u2019s theatre students were invited to join current and former members of the Broadway community to participate in the 37th Annual Broadway Flea Market and Grand Auction<\/a>, an annual fundraising event sponsored by BCEFA. Students worked directly with the casts of shows such as \u201cThe Lion King\u201d and \u201cBack to the Future,\u201d to provide logistical support in Manhattan\u2019s Theatre District. The day featured 55 tables of memorable theatrical treasures, 221 live and silent auctions lots offering experiences and rare collectibles, and 41 of Broadway\u2019s stars signing autographs and taking selfies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWorking with Broadway Cares for their annual flea market was such a fun experience for our MU Players theatre club.\u201d said Nora O\u2019Rourke, president of MU Players. \u201cEveryone involved was incredibly kind and welcoming. I was appreciative of having the opportunity to work on a Broadway event with great people!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the event, Monmouth\u2019s theatre students attended a virtual conversation with Broadway Cares Executive Director Tom Viola<\/a> titled, \u201cYour Support in Action: Essential Services for the Entertainment Community,\u201d which provided a behind-the-scenes look at how volunteer support keeps people in the entertainment industry safe and healthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Broadway Flea Market and Grand Auction is one of the most anticipated events of the season for theater lovers, and has raised more than $18.7 million since it was first held in 1987.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the success of the Broadway Flea Market and the ongoing success of \u201cCabaret for a Cause,\u201d BCEFA invited Monmouth students to be their guest at this year\u2019s \u201cRed Bucket Follies<\/a>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

BCEFA describes itself as the philanthropic heart of Broadway, helping people across the country and across the street receive lifesaving medications, health care, nutritious meals, counseling and emergency financial assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
