On Sept 23, Professor Robin Mama, Ph.D., and Associate Professor Paul Urbanski, Ph.D., joined a panel presentation on Best Practices in Supporting the Whole Student at the Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation Conference held at Rider University. Mama presented on the School of Social Works telehealth program and Urbanski presented a case example of how the department utilizes graduate assistants to provide supports for students who may be struggling academically<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Charlotte Newcombe valued higher education, establishing a scholarship program for students with financial needs. In selecting academic institutions to participate, the Foundation\u2019s trustees consider those that render exceptional services to students with disabilities and encourages programs that serve mature students. The Foundation currently funds 50 universities and colleges in New Jersey, New York, Maryland, and Pennsylvania along with Monmouth University\u2019s School of Social Work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Funding is given to colleges and universities awardees, so individual students do not apply for scholarships directly from the Foundation. Scholarships are awarded within Monmouth University\u2019s School of Social Work based on the student\u2019s need, and if they meet the criteria of the Foundation. Between 2021 and 2023, the School of Social Work has received $140,000.00 in funding with 31 students receiving scholarships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Mama, \u201cThe Charlotte Newcombe Foundation scholarship has been very important to our students, not only from an economic perspective, but also in validating their ability to pursue a college degree.\u201d Urbanski has seen the difference the scholarship can make in students\u2019 lives. \u201cThe foundation\u2019s scholarships provide a critical lifeline in helping students realize a career in social work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
