Chiu-Yin Cathy Wong, Ph.D., associate professor in the department of Curriculum and Instruction, will offer a virtual workshop on Sept. 13 for K-12 teachers, school administrators, and teacher educators that provides resources for translanguaging, the process of teaching multilingual students by including their home languages rather than solely focusing on one language, like English. Alongside Leah Shepard-Carey, Ph.D., assistant professor of graduate education at Drake University, Wong will demonstrate how teachers can use translanguaging practices even if they don\u2019t know their students\u2019 home languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is important for teachers to support their multilingual students using asset-based practices,” said Wong. She notes that by 2025, one in four students in the U.S. will be English language learners, and many teachers do not speak a second language and lack the training to support these students by using their home language. “This workshop aims to provide practical strategies for teachers and administrators so that we can support their work in the classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
