Nashaviyah Steward, senior political science student, and Rekha Datta, Ph.D., professor of Political Science and Freed Endowed Chair in Social Services, recently attended the Sorensen Distinguished Lecture on the United Nations<\/a> in New York City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The invitation-only event was held at the flagship institution, Council on Foreign Relations, and featured several speakers including UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women Sima Sami Iskandar Bahous, Ph.D. During her speech, Bahous discussed women\u2019s rights in areas of acute crisis and how UN Women<\/a> is supporting gender equality and the empowerment of women around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the lecture, Steward had the opportunity to speak with Bahous, discussing her work with Monmouth University\u2019s SAGE (Students Advocating Girls’ Education)\u2014a student-run club committed to advocating for the rights of women and girls, especially in education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Datta, \u201cDr. Bahous was quite impressed to hear college students advocating girls\u2019 education globally and locally, which is the mission of SAGE.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Sorensen Distinguished Lecture on the United Nations was established in 1996 by Gillian and Theodore C. Sorensen to highlight the United Nations and offer a special occasion for its most distinguished and experienced leaders to speak to the Council membership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
