Greason, Ph.D., associate professor and chair of the Department of Educational Counseling and Leadership, Melissa Ziobro, specialist professor of public history, and student researcher Vincent Sauchelli for &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/events\/event\/racing-into-the-space-age\">Racing into the Space Age: The Life, Scholarship, and Legacy of Dr. Walter S. McAfee \u201985HN at Monmouth and Beyond<\/a>,&#8221; on Feb. 5 at 3 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>McAfee was a distinguished African American mathematical physicist who taught atomic and nuclear physics and solid-state electronics at Monmouth College (now Monmouth University) from 1958 to 1975. McAfee gained recognition with Project Diana, a research project based at Fort Monmouth, which bounced a radar signal from the moon&#8217;s surface. On Jan. 10, 1946, the experiment was conducted successfully, an achievement that many regard as the beginning of the Space Age.<\/p>\n<p>The event is free but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/events\/event\/racing-into-the-space-age\">preregistration<\/a> is required.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Join Walter D.
