{"id":40802250347,"date":"2020-10-14T15:59:54","date_gmt":"2020-10-14T19:59:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/news\/?p=40802250347"},"modified":"2021-07-19T09:01:01","modified_gmt":"2021-07-19T13:01:01","slug":"pompeo-fargnoli-and-pulliam-on-counseling-first-gen-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/news\/pompeo-fargnoli-and-pulliam-on-counseling-first-gen-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Pompeo-Fargnoli and Pulliam on Counseling First-Gen Students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Alyson Pompeo-Fargnoli, Ph.D., and Nicole Pulliam, Ph.D., assistant professors of Educational Counseling in the School of Education, recently authored a paper, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/digitalcommons.sacredheart.edu\/jcps\/vol13\/iss3\/10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Experiential and Transformative Learning for School Counselors: Impacts of Counseling First-Generation, Low-Income, College-Bound Students<\/a>,\u201d with graduate students Amanda Lapa and Jenny Dutil.<\/p>\n<p>Pompeo-Fargnoli, who serves as the coordinator for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/school-of-education\/centers-academies\/monmouth-future-scholars-program\/\">Monmouth Future Scholars Program<\/a> (MFS), a Monmouth University-community partnership with Long Branch Schools, was interested in learning more about the experiences of the Educational Counseling program\u2019s students. As part of the MFS program, counselors-in-training run small support groups based on college- and career-readiness topics, for low-income, first-generation, college-bound students.<\/p>\n<p>Through the use of interpretative phenomenological analysis, the study, which was published in the \u201cJournal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision,\u201d examined the impacts of counseling low-income, first-generation, college-bound students that was conducted by counselor-in-training graduate students at Monmouth University. The study explored experiential learning from a transformative learning perspective, as well as its overall impact on school counseling student preparation.<\/p>\n<p>The research concluded that school counseling graduate student interns, when placed in a culturally diverse experiential learning setting, have the potential to have a transformative learning experience and increase their counselor competencies, including multicultural competencies.<\/p>\n<p>Pompeo-Fargnoli and her colleagues discussed these findings through several perspectives including social justice advocacy.
