{"id":40802247882,"date":"2020-07-02T10:14:05","date_gmt":"2020-07-02T14:14:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/news\/?p=40802247882"},"modified":"2020-07-06T14:30:36","modified_gmt":"2020-07-06T18:30:36","slug":"springsteen-archives-launches-whats-up-on-e-street-with-nils-lofgren","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/news\/springsteen-archives-launches-whats-up-on-e-street-with-nils-lofgren\/","title":{"rendered":"Springsteen Archives Launches &#8216;What\u2019s Up on E Street?&#8217; with Nils Lofgren"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>E Street Band guitarist Nils Lofgren will be the featured guest on the first episode of &#8220;What\u2019s Up on E Street?,&#8221; a new online series presented by the Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music at Monmouth University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The series goes live on Tuesday, July 7 at 10 a.m., and can be accessed on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/springsteen-archives-and-center-for-american-music\/\"><strong>Bruce Springsteen Archives &amp; Center for American Music website<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;or via the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Bruce-Springsteen-Archives-Center-for-American-Music-668082893545781\/\"><strong>Springsteen Archives\u2019 Facebook page<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new series highlights the individual members of the band and how they are dealing with the global COVID-19 pandemic. Topics covered include how they are spending their days, and how the pandemic is impacting their creativity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Music historian Bob Santelli interviewed Nils Lofgren earlier this month. Next up in the series is Roy Bittan, to be followed by interviews with other members of the E Street Band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c&#8217;What\u2019s Up on E Street?&#8217; is an attempt to capture a bit of contemporary history, namely how E Street Band members have been coping with the COVID pandemic,\u201d explained Santelli, who created the series.\u00a0 \u201cAll of our lives have been affected by this terrible disease.\u00a0To document its impact on Springsteen and the E Street Band is just one of the Archives\u2019 many responsibilities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLike all musicians, the COVID crisis has had its impact on me, and my entire family, not just as a member of the E Street Band, but also as an American,\u201d said Lofgren.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s important that the Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music capture this moment in our nation\u2019s history.\u00a0Years from now, \u2018What\u2019s Up on E Street?\u2019 will help tell the story of these trying times.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lofgren is a native of Chicago, who formed his first band, Grin, in 1968. At 18 years old, Lofgren was pulled\u00a0from reasonable obscurity to join Neil Young\u2019s band, contributing guitar\u00a0and piano work to \u201cAfter the Gold Rush.\u201d Lofgren stayed on with Young throughout part of\u00a0the \u201970s, appearing also on the\u00a0&#8220;Tonight\u2019s the Night\u00a0album&#8221; and tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1984, following the departure of Steven Van Zandt, Lofgren joined the E Street\u00a0Band just prior to the launch of the globetrotting\u00a0&#8220;Born in the U.S.A.&#8221;\u00a0tour.\u00a0 He was also part of the\u00a0&#8220;Tunnel of Love Express&#8221;\u00a0tour in 1988.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the early 1990s, during the hiatus of the E Street Band, Lofgren performed with Ringo\u00a0Starr\u2019s All-Starr Band and released a number of well-received albums under his own\u00a0name (including\u00a0&#8220;Silver Lining,&#8221; which featured a duet with Springsteen on \u201cValentine\u201d).\u00a0And when the E Street Band reconvened in 1999, Springsteen diplomatically answered\u00a0the question of which guitarist would be brought back into the fold by including both Van Zandt and Lofgren. Lofgren is still releasing solo albums between E Street Band tours, and reunited with Neil Young and Crazy Horse in 2018 for a number of gigs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About the Springsteen Archives: \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music at Monmouth University serves as the official archival repository for Bruce Springsteen\u2019s written works, photographs, periodicals, and artifacts.\u00a0 The Center preserves and promotes the legacy of Bruce Springsteen and his role in American music, while honoring and celebrating icons of American music like Woody Guthrie, Robert Johnson, Hank Williams, Frank Sinatra, and others.\u00a0 The Archives comprise nearly 35,000 items from 47 countries, ranging from books and concert memorabilia to articles and promotional materials.
