Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., will feature Raymond Santana Jr.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">on Wednesday, Jan. 29<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> from 2:30-4:00 p.m. in Wilson Hall. This event is f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">ree and open to the public.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Santana is an advocate and activist for prison reform, as well as a fashion designer, producer, and member<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> of the New York City Justice League. He is a member of the &#8220;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Exonerated Five,&#8221;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> whose life story has been featured in the award-winning documentary &#8220;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Central Park Five,&#8221;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and more recently Ava DuVernay&#8217;s &#8220;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">When They See Us&#8221;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0on Netflix.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">This is the sec<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ond year the university is hosting the MLK Distinguished Speaker <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">event.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">The speaker is chosen via committee deliberation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">through<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0the President\u2019s Advisory Council on Diversity and Inclusion<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, according to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Zaneta<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Rago-Craft, Ed.D., director of the university&#8217;s Intercultural Center.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">On the night of April 19, 1989, a young woman was brutally attacked in Central Park. Five boys, including Santana, were tried and convicted of the crime in a frenzied case that rocked the city. At the time, the defendants were between 14 and 16 years of age. They became known collectively as &#8220;The Central Park Five.&#8221; On Dec. 19, 2002, after DNA evidence and a confession from the true perpetrator, the convictions of the five men were overturned. Santana spent five years in prison for a crime he did not commit.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Now known as &#8220;The Exonerated Five,&#8221; the group has been committed to advocating and educating people on the disparities in America\u2019s criminal justice system. The investigation of this conviction has raised questions regarding police coercion and false confessions, as well as the vulnerability of juveniles during police interrogations.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Santana tweeted award-winning director Ava DuVernay about the story of the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Central Park Five,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> which led to it becoming the subject of the hit Netflix series, &#8220;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">When They See Us.&#8221;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">The four-part series not only became one of Netflix\u2019s most-watched shows, but it also earned the streaming giant its most Emmy nominations with a total of 16.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Santana now works closely with the Innocence Project<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">This event is c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">oordinated by the President\u2019s Advisory Council on Diversity and Inclusion, the Office of the Provost, Student Activities, and the Intercultural Center.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Link to event flyer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2020\/01\/MLK2020.pdf\">Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Distinguished Speaker in Social Justice Annual Lecture<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Distinguished Speaker in Social Justice annual lecture, which honors those who carry on the legacy of Rev.
