{"id":40802231888,"date":"2018-10-09T15:21:21","date_gmt":"2018-10-09T19:21:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/news\/?p=40802231888"},"modified":"2018-11-12T13:27:37","modified_gmt":"2018-11-12T18:27:37","slug":"jerusalem-is-the-focus-of-two-new-books-from-professor-saliba-sarsar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/news\/jerusalem-is-the-focus-of-two-new-books-from-professor-saliba-sarsar\/","title":{"rendered":"Jerusalem is the Focus of Two New Books from Professor Saliba Sarsar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Saliba Sarsar \u201978, Ph.D., Monmouth University professor of political science and expert on Arab-Israeli peace issues and Middle East affairs, has published two books that examine Jerusalem\u2019s history and the ongoing struggle for peace and unity its residents face.<\/p>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive alignright wp-image-790809486\" title=\"Saliba-Book\" src=\"https:\/\/hcef.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Saliba-Book-692x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Book Cover, What Jerusalem Means to us\" width=\"176\" height=\"261\" \/><\/em>&#8220;What Jerusalem Means To Us:\u00a0Christian Perspectives and Reflections&#8221; is a collection of essays by 23 Palestinian and other Christian leaders of various cultural, ethnic, and national backgrounds sharing their intimate experiences in and reflections on the Holy City. Sarsar, who edited the volume, says \u201cWhat comes alive through each heartfelt essay is that Jerusalem belongs to humanity in general\u2014to all who seek, strive for, and pursue a higher calling in its hallowed ground\u2014and it should remain as such for eternity.\u201d He said there are plans for two additional volumes that will focus on Muslim and Jewish perspectives and reflections.<\/p>\n<p>In &#8220;Jerusalem: The Home in Our Hearts,&#8221; Sarsar tells the colorful, multidimensional, and nuanced story of his own family\u2019s history, which is inextricably tied to the Holy City. The book integrates aspects of daily life, community connections, and aspirations in the midst of poverty, conflict, and pain. Extending from the Ottoman control of Jerusalem to the British Mandate, from the 1948 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"imgBlkFront\" class=\"a-dynamic-image image-stretch-vertical frontImage alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com\/images\/I\/51uQpcTpgnL._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"190\" height=\"285\" \/>Arab-Israeli War to Jordan\u2019s rule, and from the Six-Day War to Israel\u2019s rule, the story makes evident that ordinary people can overcome extraordinary conditions through faith, hope, and resilience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegardless of the difficulties and uncertainties facing Jerusalem, the city remains the perfect place for checking the pulse, for hearing the heartbeat, for celebrations and songs,\u201d said Sarsar. \u201cJerusalem calls attention to the human in each of us for realizing potential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarsar, who was born and raised in Jerusalem, has dedicated his life\u2019s work to healing the differences between Israelis and Palestinians. He has received numerous awards for his efforts, which have been highlighted by media outlets around the world, including the <em>New York Times<\/em>.
