{"id":32212264618,"date":"2013-04-09T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2013-04-09T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/news\/academy-award-nominated-filmmaker-sam-green-presents-short-films\/"},"modified":"2018-02-14T12:59:21","modified_gmt":"2018-02-14T17:59:21","slug":"academy-award-nominated-filmmaker-sam-green-presents-short-films","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/news\/academy-award-nominated-filmmaker-sam-green-presents-short-films\/","title":{"rendered":"ACADEMY AWARD-NOMINATED FILMMAKER SAM GREEN PRESENTS SHORT FILMS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Academy award-nominated filmmaker Sam Green will bring his collection of short films What We Need Is The Impossible! to Monmouth University&#8217;s Pollak Theatre on\u00a0Monday, April 22\u00a0at 7:30 p.m. The film is free and open to the public and there will be a Q &amp; A with the filmmaker following the screening.<\/p>\n<p>This pro\u00adgram gath\u00aders together for the first time an evening length pro\u00adgram of Green&#8217;s short films, rang\u00ading from a por\u00adtrait of the world&#8217;s largest shop\u00adping mall in South\u00adern China, which is actu\u00adally com\u00adpletely empty (<em>Utopia PT<\/em><em>.<\/em><em>3<\/em>), to an elegy for Mered\u00adith Hunter, the young man who was killed by Hells Angels at the noto\u00adri\u00adous 1969 Alta\u00admont con\u00adcert (<em>lot 63, grave c<\/em>). Other films from the pro\u00adgram include:<em>The<\/em><em>\u00a0Fabulous Stains: Behind The Movie<\/em>, the remark\u00adable story of the cult film directed by Lou Adler in 1982; and\u00a0<em>The\u00a0<\/em><em>Universal Language<\/em>, a por\u00adtrait of Esperanto, an arti\u00adfi\u00adcial lan\u00adguage that was cre\u00adated in the late 1800s with the hope of cre\u00adat\u00ading world peace, and the world\u00adwide move\u00adment of peo\u00adple who still speak it. Run\u00adning through Green&#8217;s films is a cel\u00ade\u00adbra\u00adtion of ide\u00adal\u00adism and the search for mean\u00ading along with the often humor\u00adous real\u00adi\u00adties of human\u00a0folly.<\/p>\n<p>Sam Green is a New York City-based documentary filmmaker. His film\u00a0<em>The Weather Underground<\/em>\u00a0was nominated for an Academy Award in 2004, broadcast nationally on PBS, and included in the Whitney Biennial. Green&#8217;s most recent documentary\u00a0<em>The Love Song of R. Buckminster Fuller<\/em>\u00a0features a live score by legendary indie rock band Yo La Tengo and is currently screening widely. Green received his master&#8217;s degree in journalism from the University of California, Berkeley,\u00a0where he studied documentary with acclaimed filmmaker Marlon Riggs. He has received grants from Creative Capital, the Rockefeller and Guggenheim foundations, and the National Endowment for the Arts.<\/p>\n<p>The event is sponsored by Monmouth University&#8217;s Department of Communication and the Center for the Arts, and part of the &#8220;On Screen: In Person&#8221; film series, which brings six films and filmmakers to Monmouth University as part of a tour of the Eastern seaboard.
