{"id":32212263756,"date":"2012-01-27T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-01-27T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/news\/monmouth-university-celebrates-black-history-month-2\/"},"modified":"2020-01-13T15:09:34","modified_gmt":"2020-01-13T20:09:34","slug":"monmouth-university-celebrates-black-history-month-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/news\/monmouth-university-celebrates-black-history-month-2\/","title":{"rendered":"MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On <strong>Wednesday, February 1 at 12:45 p.m. in the Pompeii Room, Wilson Hall, <\/strong>a <strong>Flag Raising Ceremony<\/strong> and reception will be held featuring the Monmouth University Choir.\u00a0 Following at <strong>1 p.m. on February 1<\/strong>, in the<strong> Versailles Room, Wilson Hall, Keynote speaker and acclaimed poet Monica A. Hand<\/strong> will be reading excerpts from her book \u201cme and Nina.\u201d Monica A. Hand is a poet and book artist who is exploring a nomadic lifestyle.\u00a0 Her manuscript, \u201cme and Nina\u201d received a 2010 Kinereth Gensler Award from Alice James Books.\u00a0 Her poems have appeared in numerous publications. She has a MFA in Poetry and Poetry in Translation from Drew University.<\/p>\n<p>On<strong> Thursday, February 9 at 1 p.m. in the Club Dining Room, Magill Commons, <\/strong>Negro League Baseball expert Larry Hogan will present<strong>\u00a0 \u201cBefore You Can Say \u2018Jackie Robinson\u2019: Black Baseball in America &amp; NJ in the Era of the Color Line.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Mr. Hogan will be accompanied by two former Negro League baseball players Mr. Robert Scott and Mr. Pedro Sierra.\u00a0 Mr. Hogan was on the MLB Hall of Fame committee that voted on the recent induction of Black ballplayers.\u00a0 He is the author of the definitive book on Black baseball \u201cShades of Glory.\u201d Mr. Scott was a strong right-handed pitcher whose baseball career spanned from 1941 to 1955. Mr. Sierra had a twenty-two year career that began in 1954, when he left Cuba as a 16-year-old to play for the Indianapolis Clowns in the Negro League and included two stints in the Washington Senators&#8217; system. He left baseball in 1976 and worked for the Montgomery County (Maryland) Department of Recreation for 25 years.
