At about 12:26 p.m. today, Monday, December 12, 2011, many people throughout the state of New Jersey received a text message on their cell phones stating that there is a “Civil Emergency in this area until 1:24 PM EST Take Shelter Now U.S. Govern”. A check by the Monmouth University Police Department along with federal, state and other local authorities has not been able to verify this message or its origin. At this time, there is no evidence that an emergency exists.
We will continue to monitor the situation and update as information becomes available.
Verizon Wireless has confirmed that the previous “CMAS Alert” notification was inadvertently transmitted earlier in the day. They stated that the alert was part of an internal test of their communications systems.
