{"id":40802228714,"date":"2020-03-12T13:36:47","date_gmt":"2020-03-12T17:36:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/mca\/?p=40802228714"},"modified":"2020-03-12T13:36:47","modified_gmt":"2020-03-12T17:36:47","slug":"ladies-who-launch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/mca\/ladies-who-launch\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Ladies\u2019 Who Launch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Center for the Arts at <strong>Monmouth University<\/strong> has announced that tickets are on sale for an April 4 event featuring the standup comics of <strong>Ladies of Laughter<\/strong>, coming to campus with their latest touring show, \u201c<strong>Funny and Fabulous<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scheduled for 8 p.m., the one-night stand at the <strong>Pollak Theatre<\/strong> marks the area debut of an institution that\u2019s been called the premier \u201ccareer-builder for women in comedy;\u201d a breakout nationwide sensation that\u2019s served as a crucial launch-pad for the likes of screen star Amy Schumer, \u201cLast Comic Standing\u201d finalist Tammy Pescatelli, and Melissa Rauch of the long-running sitcom \u201cThe Big Bang Theory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was nearly 22 years ago, inside \u201can un-air conditioned YWCA in Ridgewood, New Jersey,\u201d that executive producer Peggy Boyce inaugurated the Ladies of Laughter franchise as \u201cThe Mary Jo Comedy Awards;\u201d a competition that honored the memory of the late NYC-based comedian and mentor Mary Jo Wobker. Over the course of some five weeks, dozens of veteran female comics and inspired amateurs from all over the Garden State showcased their \u201cA\u201d material to capacity crowds \u2014 and it wasn\u2019t long before the re-branded event broke out of that stuffy gymnasium; attracting national sponsors, and staking out space on major regional stages like Caesars Atlantic City, and even Madison Square Garden. These days, Ladies of Laughter attracts the participation of funny women from all around the English-speaking world; offering a supportive platform for aspiring comedy professionals, and honoring the pioneers who blazed a path for all to follow \u2014 such as Carol Burnett, recipient in 2018 of the nonprofit organization\u2019s first Spirit Award.<\/p>\n<p>Featured in the Pollak Theatre engagement will be the 2012 winner of the Ladies of Laughter competition \u2014 Monmouth County\u2019s own <strong>Robin Fox<\/strong>, a homemaker turned award-winning standup who\u2019s headlined venues up and down the east coast, made riotously regular TV and radio appearances, and even served as a \u201cHot Topic\u201d of conversation on ABC\u2019s \u201cThe View,\u201d courtesy of her quirky perspectives on suburban family life.
