{"id":40802228606,"date":"2020-02-07T15:26:06","date_gmt":"2020-02-07T20:26:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/mca\/?p=40802228606"},"modified":"2020-02-07T15:26:06","modified_gmt":"2020-02-07T20:26:06","slug":"the-smithereens-with-guest-vocalist-marshall-crenshaw-on-march-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/mca\/the-smithereens-with-guest-vocalist-marshall-crenshaw-on-march-7\/","title":{"rendered":"The Smithereens with guest vocalist Marshall Crenshaw on March 7"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Center for the Arts at <strong>Monmouth University<\/strong> has announced that tickets are on sale for a March 7 event featuring the members of the New Jersey Hall of Fame band <strong>The Smithereens<\/strong>, in concert with special guest vocalist, <strong>Marshall Crenshaw at 8 pm in the Pollak Theatre<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Following the sad passing of lead vocalist Pat DiNizio in 2017, the founding members of The Smithereens \u2014 guitarist <strong>Jim Babjak<\/strong>, drummer <strong>Dennis Diken<\/strong>, and bassist <strong>Mike Mesaros<\/strong> honored their friend\u2019s legacy by carrying on in the only way that the prolific performer could ever countenance: by taking once more to the live stage. It was the right move for a cherished Garden State institution who achieved a nationwide profile through a string of acclaimed LP and EP recordings that began some 35 years ago \u2014 and who earned a devoted coastal NJ audience through frequent plays on the Shore\u2019s \u201cmodern rock\u201d radio station WHTG-FM, in addition to numerous gigs at such legendary clubs as the Stone Pony and the Green Parrot. Above all else, there were the songs \u2014 \u201cBeauty and Sadness,\u201d \u201cBlood and Roses,\u201d \u201cBehind the Wall of Sleep,\u201d \u201cStrangers When We Meet,\u201d \u201cOnly a Memory,\u201d \u201cA Girl Like You,\u201d \u201cBlues Before and After,\u201d \u201cToo Much Passion,\u201d and so many others \u2014 moody, mature, magnificent songs that staked out the crossroads of alternative\/punk energy and the ambitious \u201cteenage symphonies\u201d of such heroes as Brian Wilson and The Beatles.<\/p>\n<p>When it came time to return to the road in 2018, The Smithereens called upon a singer, songwriter, guitarist, radio host and musicologist with his own unimpeachable set of credentials \u2014 a Detroit native who clocked countless performances as John Lennon in the touring troupe of Broadway\u2019s \u201cBeatlemania;\u201d who portrayed and performed as Buddy Holly in the feature film \u201cLa Bamba,\u201d and who was among the trusted peers who ably stepped up and kicked out the jams, when the surviving members of the legendary 1960s counter cultural rock force MC5 assembled for a reunion tour.<\/p>\n<p>More than just a musical chameleon or impressionist, <strong>Marshall Crenshaw<\/strong> is a headline act in his own right; a bandleader and composer whose pop gems have been covered by artists ranging from The Gin Blossoms, Robert Gordon and John C. Reilly, to Ronnie Spector, Bette Midler, and Susanna Hoffs.
