Monmouth\nUniversity was saddened by the loss of dedicated colleague and University\nbenefactor Robert M. Rechnitz, Ph.D., who died peacefully on Oct. 12, 2019, at\nthe age of 89. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A professor of English and American literature, Dr. Rechnitz\ntaught at Monmouth for more than 30 years and was named Professor Emeritus in\n1996. In 2001, he was recognized with the Maurice Pollak Award for\nDistinguished Community Service at the University\u2019s Founders\u2019 Day celebration\nand convocation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Along with his wife, Monmouth alumna Joan Rechnitz \u201984, \u201912HN,\nDr. Rechnitz established a legacy of philanthropy that extends throughout the\nMonmouth County region. Their generosity has supported scholarship and\ninternship opportunities for students, academic programming, and Mon- mouth\u2019s\nCenter for the Arts and Urban Coast Institute. The creation of Rechnitz Hall,\nMonmouth\u2019s premier instructional space and gallery for art and design; the\nUrban Coast Institute\u2019s Marine Science and Policy Initiative; and the Endowed\nChair in Marine and Environmental Law and Policy are all a direct result of the\nRechnitzes\u2019 philanthropic commitment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey gave generously to worthy nonprofits all along the Jersey\nShore: hospitals, schools, social service agencies, arts programs,\u201d says Carol\nCohen LaRose \u201969, a family friend. \u201cMost people didn\u2019t know that because they\ndidn\u2019t want to put their names on anything. Bob was always so humble about the\nimpact they had in the region. It was never about self-aggrandizement for him.\u201d\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was a visionary. Just a wildly brilliant man, who was full of wit, and who never lost his love for Monmouth.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

LaRose says she first met Dr. Rechnitz during her undergraduate\ndays at Monmouth, and later worked with him on a campaign to raise money to\nbuild the current home of Two River Theater, the company he founded while still\nteaching at Monmouth. \u201cHe was a visionary,\u201d says LaRose. \u201cJust a wildly\nbrilliant man, who was full of wit, and who never lost his love for Monmouth.\nIt really was a part of his heart,\u201d said LaRose. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Monmouth University community extends its heartfelt\ncondolences to the entire Rechnitz family. Dr. Rechnitz\u2019s contributions to\neducation, the arts, the environment, health care, and more have enhanced the\nlives of many and will undoubtedly serve generations of students and community\nmembers for years to come. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
