{"id":16581,"date":"2023-01-09T11:12:34","date_gmt":"2023-01-09T16:12:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/magazine\/?p=16581"},"modified":"2023-01-09T11:15:40","modified_gmt":"2023-01-09T16:15:40","slug":"the-view-from-here-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/magazine\/the-view-from-here-3\/","title":{"rendered":"The View from Here"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\" id=\"bernice-king-daughter-of-mlk-brings-message-of-peace-to-campus\">Bernice King, Daughter of MLK, Brings Message of Peace to Campus<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Bernice King, CEO of The King Center, the official memorial to the life, work, and legacy of her father, Martin Luther King Jr., was the featured speaker for a moderated discussion titled \u201cBuilding the Beloved Community\u201d last October. The event was cosponsored by Monmouth\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/magazine\/the-long-struggle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Social Justice Academy<\/a> and Intercultural Center and was part of the Academy\u2019s Combating Racial Injustice through Education Professional Development Series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cbeloved community\u201d is a term popularized by her father and her mother, Coretta Scott King, and refers to \u201ca love-centered community where the humanity of everyone is honored and respected \u2026 [and where] every individual is able to thrive and live out their purpose in this life,\u201d Bernice King said. \u201cThere\u2019s a commitment inside the beloved community to work to rid it of injustices, in particular my father\u2019s triple evils of racism, militarism, and poverty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome people feel like the beloved community is a utopia &#8230; something that we cannot achieve because of our diversity and differences,\u201d Bernice King said. \u201cNothing could be further from the truth.\u201d Conflict will always be present in society, she explained. But by committing to \u201cresolving that conflict in a peaceful manner in a manner that\u2019s consistent with the teachings of nonviolence,\u201d individuals can build a more just and equitable society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy father on numerous occasions said, \u2018The aftermath of nonviolence is the creation of the beloved community,\u2019\u201d King said. During her opening remarks, King referenced her father\u2019s visit to Monmouth 56 years ago. During his speech \u201cThe Future of Integration,\u201d the late King remarked, \u201cWe have come a long, long way; but &#8230; we must honestly face the fact that we still have a long, long way to go before the problem of racial injustice is solved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat daddy said back then is very true today,\u201d King said last fall. \u201cWe\u2019ve made some tremendous progress, but if we\u2019re not careful, we can revert back to those times. Photo by Anthony DePrimo.<\/em><\/h6>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\" id=\"in-a-class-of-their-own\">In a Class of Their Own<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Last fall\u2019s incoming first-year class had an <mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">average GPA of 3.61<\/mark>\u2014the highest average of any incoming Monmouth class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The class* also had the <mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">highest average SAT score <\/mark>in the University\u2019s history: <mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">1211<\/mark>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Additionally, <mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">more than 30% of the students came from <\/mark>outside New Jersey, representing <mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">19 U.S. states and 11 foreign countries<\/mark>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\">This marks the <mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">greatest geographic diversity in Monmouth\u2019s history<\/mark>.<\/p>\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"students-whose-admission-evaluation-included-standardized-tests\"><em>*Students whose admission evaluation included standardized tests. <\/em><\/h6>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\" id=\"overheard-on-campus\">Overheard on Campus<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\"><strong>\u201cWe\u2019re in the position of being early adopters for having a written constitution. I liken it to having an iPhone 3G. \u2026 We\u2019re the first in the neighborhood to have it, and it\u2019s still the best. The design is elegant, and it works well. &#8230; [But] we may be losing out on some functionality that other societies may have acquired, and in these last few years, I\u2019m afraid that the original company may not be supporting the repairs \u2026 and warranties on the thing anymore.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u2014Associate Professor of History Christopher DeRosa, during a wide-ranging panel discussion titled Historical and Contemporary Perspectives on the Constitution<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-monmouth-brag-board\">The Monmouth Brag Board<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"still-soaring\">Still Soaring<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Monmouth retained its highest-ever ranking (No. 18) on <em>U.S. News &amp; World Report<\/em>\u2019s 2022\u20132023 \u201cBest Colleges\u201d list in the Regional Universities North category and is also featured in the publication\u2019s Best Colleges for Veterans, Best Value Schools, and Top Performers on Social Mobility lists.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"rock-on\">Rock On!<\/h3>\n\n\n<p><em>Billboard<\/em> named Monmouth one of its Top Music Business Schools for 2022, praising the University\u2019s role as the home of the <a href=\"https:\/\/springsteenarchives.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music<\/a> as well as the \u201chybrid model that combines classic business coursework from the University\u2019s business school with its music and music business curriculum.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"serving-the-greater-good\">Serving the Greater Good<\/h3>\n\n\n<p><em>Washington Monthly<\/em>, which ranks colleges and universities based on \u201cwhat they do for our country,\u201d named Monmouth to its 2022 College Rankings: Master\u2019s University list and 2022 Best Bang for the Buck Colleges: Northeast list.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"pardon-our-humblebrag\">Pardon Our Humblebrag<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>The magazine won a gold Circle of Excellence Award from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education for the series of illustrations that accompanied our Fall 2020 cover story, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/magazine\/the-long-struggle\/\">\u201cThe Long
