{"id":13501,"date":"2021-05-05T14:53:34","date_gmt":"2021-05-05T18:53:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/magazine\/?p=13501"},"modified":"2021-05-05T15:57:47","modified_gmt":"2021-05-05T19:57:47","slug":"work-from-home-is-here-to-stay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/magazine\/work-from-home-is-here-to-stay\/","title":{"rendered":"Work From Home Is Here to Stay"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Based on what we\u2019ve seen over the past year, a large percentage of staff\u2014especially professional and technical staff\u2014are working remotely, and the overwhelming majority of that work has gone much better than anyone ever expected. So the trajectory of moving into the next 10 or 15 years has really been accelerated. Business doesn\u2019t need to go on as it did pre-COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What American capitalism is all about is profit, the bottom line, and nonprofits want to minimize expense. So what\u2019s happened already, and I don\u2019t see it stopping, is brick-and-mortar organizations\u2014which require that staff be in the office at 9 a.m. and leave at 5 p.m.\u2014became part of history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think what\u2019s going to really suffer is spontaneous interaction and spontaneous growth\u2014growth that comes out of personal, in-person relationships, not on Zoom but over a cup of coffee or during a brief break when you go out and you sit in the sun and think through an issue with colleagues from another area\u2014and eureka. That\u2019s not something that you can schedule; it\u2019s organic. And I think that\u2019s going to be where organizations are going to be challenged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Management will need to be really innovative and creative, and I think they really will have to borrow from psychology, sociology, and anthropology to learn how to sustain culture. Organizational culture is an intimate thing, and it\u2019s shared, in many ways, informally. So there will need to be an opportunity for groups to get together and have face time\u2014weekly, monthly, or quarterly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ability to do that will certainly improve with the vaccine.
