In this specialized certificate within the M.A. in Anthropology program, you will prepare for a career as a professional archaeologist or a museum\/preservation professional by learning the methodological and substantive skills and approaches that define these fields. Our faculty members have particular strengths in historical archaeology and the pre-contact archaeology of the Northeast. Current research projects focus on conflict archaeology, the archaeology of slavery and freedom, and monuments and commemoration. We have active research projects in the Middle Atlantic Region and the Caribbean. The distinctive curriculum allows you to learn directly from veteran faculty members with active professional networks as well as participate in diverse and extensive fieldwork, or which may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>participating in grant funded research at nationally significant historic sites such as Morristown National Historical Park and Joseph Bonaparte\u2019s Point Breeze<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>analyzing collections of historic artifacts from colonial New Amsterdam\/New York<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>traveling to Jamaica to participate in a public archaeology project about the lives of enslaved people at the Orange Valley Estate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>presenting your research at regional and national academic conferences,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>designing an independent research project demonstrating in-depth knowledge of archaeological research<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>developing skills in GIS, artifact analysis, faunal analysis, and historical research<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>completing an internship at a regional or national museum or cultural resource management firm<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Through core courses and electives, you will participate in collaborative research projects and archaeological excavations.
