While the University may disclose certain information, referred to as \u201cdirectory information,\u201d the University generally must have written permission from a parent or eligible student in order to release any other information from a student\u2019s education record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/general-counsel\/ferpa\/#Directory\">Directory information<\/a> may be released by the University without a student&#8217;s permission unless the student states that they do not want their directory information released. The student must submit this request using the FERPA &#8211; Do Not Disclose e-FORM which can be accessed from the <em>myMU<\/em> student portal. The <em>&#8220;Do Not Disclose&#8221;&nbsp;<\/em>will remain in place indefinitely unless the student submits a written request to have it removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following links provide additional information regarding the types of records covered by FERPA, exceptions to the non-release of records, and information considered as directory information by the University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/general-counsel\/ferpa\/#Educational\">Education Records<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/general-counsel\/ferpa\/#NonEducational\">Non-Education Records<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/general-counsel\/ferpa\/#Exceptions\">Exceptions to Non-Release of Records<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/general-counsel\/ferpa\/#Directory\">Directory Information<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"education-records\"><a id=\"Educational\" class=\"anchorMargin\" name=\"Educational\"><\/a>Education Records<\/h2>\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Records directly related to a student maintained by the University<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Includes all forms of information (paper, computer, tape, oral, etc.)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"noneducation-records\"><a id=\"NonEducational\" class=\"anchorMargin\" name=\"NonEducational\"><\/a>Non-Education Records<\/h2>\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Records of University personnel in sole possession of maker; no access<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Records created and maintained by law enforcement unit for law enforcement purpose (does not include regular education records in possession of law enforcement unit)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Records of employment concerning non-student employees<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Records maintained by doctor, psychiatrist, psychologist, or other professional used only for treatment of student and not available to others (can be reviewed by professional of student&#8217;s choice)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Financial records of student&#8217;s parents<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Confidential letters and statements of recommendation placed in record before January 1, 1975 and not used for other purpose<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Confidential recommendations respecting admission, application for employment, or receipt of an honor if student waived right of access; waiver valid only if optional, student may on request be notified of all persons making such recommendations and recommendations used solely for purpose intended<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"exceptions-to-nonrelease-of-records\"><a id=\"Exceptions\" class=\"anchorMargin\" name=\"Exceptions\"><\/a>Exceptions to Non-Release of Records<\/h2>\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Student (limited to release of student&#8217;s own record)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other University officials with legitimate educational interest<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Officials of other institutions in which student seeks to enroll<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Authorized representatives of the U.S. Comptroller General, Secretary of Education, Attorney General, or State educational authorities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In connection with application for or receipt of financial aid<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>State or local officials pursuant to state law in connection with the administration of the juvenile justice system<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Researchers, if the information does not permit the personal identification of students and information is destroyed when not needed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accrediting organizations, to carry out their functions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Parent of dependent student (if listed as dependent on tax return) unless court order, law, or legally binding document specifically revokes rights<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In connection with emergency if necessary to protect health or safety of student or others (narrowly construed)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Federal grand jury subpoena (court order no disclosure to student)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other law enforcement subpoena (court may order no disclosure to student)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other judicial order or subpoena (prior notice to student in advance of release)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Directory information (if notice and no objection)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>With written consent of student specifying records to be released, reasons for release, and to whom released<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Results of any University disciplinary hearing against a student to alleged victim of any crime of violence or a non-forcible sex offense<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alcohol and drug offenses to parents\/guardians of students under 21<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"directory-information\"><a id=\"Directory\" class=\"anchorMargin\" name=\"Directory\"><\/a>Directory Information<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Directory information means information contained in an education record of a student that would not generally be considered harmful or an invasion of privacy if disclosed. Directory information includes the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Address<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Biographical data for public relations purposes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Birth date<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Birthplace<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Class level<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dates of attendance at Monmouth University<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Degrees and awards received at Monmouth University<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Degree candidacy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Degree status<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Major field of study<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most recent previous educational institution attended<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Participation in recognized activities and sports<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Photographs of student<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Registered credits for the current term<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Student&#8217;s name<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Official student e-mail address<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Student&#8217;s I.D. number<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Telephone number<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Veteran&#8217;s status<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FERPA is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records.
