When Jeffrey Downing '14 was looking to complete a Family Nurse Practitioner program, a flexible environment was near the top of his list. Working nights at Hackensack University Medical Center, Jeffrey needed the ability to choose when and where to study and complete assignments.
"When I was an undergraduate, I took online courses and it worked out well," Jeffrey said. "The online component of Monmouth's Family Nurse Practitioner program has given me more time with my family while still feeling connected to a larger community. I have the opportunity to meet and talk with professors several times throughout the semester, which provides me with the assurance that I can interact with them and get face-to-face answers when I need them."
While at Monmouth, Jeffrey has had hands-on experiences every step of the way. He has been able to use the diagnostic tools and assessment skills learned at Monmouth in his primary clinical, and Jeffrey has also been able to work as a graduate assistant in nursing. It's been one of his most rewarding experiences at Monmouth.
"I have worked closely with faculty in numerous projects and their research," he said. "In this role, I've not only gained valuable academic knowledge that I will use in my future practice, but I have learned a great deal about administration and management. By learning some of these fundamentals, I will be better prepared when the day comes to manage my own family medical practice."

How Monmouth helped me achieve my goals
I feel confident in my skill set and look forward to graduation. My goal is to enter into practice with a firm foundation and understanding of how to function as a Family Nurse Practitioner, and I feel Monmouth has placed me firmly on track to achieve those goals. I feel like I not only have had high quality professors, but caring coaches that have helped me navigate my way.
Why I'm proud of Monmouth
The Monmouth University community is phenomenal. I feel that I really have gotten to know my professors-the experience is very student centered. I feel supported and challenged in my development. I feel that I have not only gained mentors but colleagues that have an active interest in my success.
