During the academic advising process, I always encourage students to not only fulfill their Ex Ed degree requirement but to seek out chances to volunteer and to take advantage of other Ex Ed opportunities, like Service Learning, Cooperative Education, and internships, in order to gain a broader view of their major and future career as well as the world and the human condition in general. Many students return to visit me after an experience to explain what a positive difference it made in their lives. I think Albert Einstein was right when he said, “The only source of knowledge is experience.”
Career-related skills drive solutions for employer challenges across all industries. Naturally, employers clearly prefer to hire students with career-related experience. Ex Ed is a direct pathway to this experience. Monmouth University is dedicated to helping students succeed by requiring Ex Ed of all graduates, and by providing the personal support necessary to help our students make the most of career opportunities.
I have seen the transformation in students upon their return to the Monmouth campus. They often ask me why study abroad isn’t a mandatory college requirement—it’s that awesome to them.
