DESCRIPTION:Join us for a very special Adult Education Series Earth Day lecture with Heide Estes introducing the topic of Climate Crisis: What Can We Do? \nClimate crisis is real\, and is constantly in the news\, and triggers climate grief and climate anxiety. We need to take action\, and fast … but how? We need change at all levels: individual\, corporate\, and governmental\, and this lecture will provide strategies for how to engage in all three areas. You will learn about the importance of talking about climate with friends and family members\, voting with climate change in mind\, and disinvesting from fossil fuels — via your retirement fund\, your workplace\, anywhere you have influence. You will find out about ways you can change your diet\, your home\, and your transportation to lower your own carbon footprint\, and provide an example to those people you’re talking with. You will learn about resources you can use to get educated\, and to stay up to date with the latest developments. All you have to do is Zoom in and join the discussion! \nThis month’s novel is Patti Smith\, Just Kids.\n \nPatti Smith’s definitive memoir: an evocative\, honest and moving coming-of-age story of her extraordinary relationship with the artist Robert Mapplethorpe. In 1967\, a chance meeting between two young people led to a romance and a lifelong friendship that would carry each to international success never dreamed of. The backdrop is Brooklyn\, Chelsea Hotel\, Max’s Kansas City\, Scribner’s Bookstore\, Coney Island\, Warhol’s Factory and the whole city resplendent. DESCRIPTION:Join us for Tuesday Night Book Club! Hosted by Monmouth University’s Ken Womack\, each month we’ll explore a different novel. All you have to do is Zoom in and join the discussion! \nThis month’s novel is Toni Morrison’s Beloved. The magnificent Pulitzer Prize–winning work that brought the wrenching experience of slavery into the literature of our time\, enlarging our comprehension of America’s original sin.  Upon the original publication of Beloved in 1987\, John Leonard wrote in the Los Angeles Times: “I can’t imagine American literature without it.” Nearly two decades later\, The New York Times chose Beloved as the best American novel of the previous fifty years. \nSet in post–Civil War Ohio\, it is the story of Sethe\, an escaped slave who has lost a husband and buried a child; who has withstood savagery and not gone mad. Sethe\, who now lives in a small house on the edge of town with her daughter\, Denver\, her mother-in-law\, Baby Suggs\, and a disturbing\, mesmerizing apparition who calls herself Beloved. Sethe works at “beating back the past\,” but it makes itself heard and felt incessantly: in her memory; in Denver’s fear of the world outside the house; in the sadness that consumes Baby Suggs; in the arrival of Paul D\, a fellow former slave; and\, most powerfully\, in Beloved\, whose childhood belongs to the hideous logic of slavery and who has now come from the “place over there” to claim retribution for what she lost and for what was taken from her. \nWe are still waiting for more information about whether we will be able to hold this event in person. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a World Cinema Series zoom discussion illuminating the theme “Living on the Edge: Displacement\, Identity\, and Resilience” by analyzing the message and impact of the 2018 film\, Shoplifters. \nShoplifters is a 2018 Japanese drama film directed\, written and edited by Hirokazu Kore-eda. Starring Lily Franky and Sakura Ando\, it is about a family that relies on shoplifting to cope with a life of poverty. \nShoplifters premiered at the Cannes Film Festival\, where it won the Palme d’Or. The film Shoplifters won three Mainichi Film Awards\, including Best Film\, and the Asia Pacific Screen Award for Best Feature Film\, and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars and the Golden Globes. \nThe discussion of the film will be led by  Dr. Rekha Datta\, professor in the department of Political Science and Dr. Frank Cipriani\, specialist professor in the department of World Languages and Literature. \nThe film is available for streaming on a number of platforms including Vudu\, Amazon Prime Video\, YouTube\, Google Play Movies and TV\, or iTunes (for rent or purchase). \nWhen you register you will be provided the meeting link to join the conversation. Often considered the thinking person’s rock ‘n’ rollers they were also one of the most successful musical acts of the 1960’s.  \nThis three-session virtual course taught by Gary Wenstrup\, uses  audio and visual content to trace the arc of Simon & Garfunkel’s career from their surprise teenybopper hit “Hey Schoolgirl” …to the folk-rock classic “Sound of Silence” to the ever popular “Mrs. Robinson” …to the majesty of “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” It will also cover their careers post-breakup with special attention paid to Paul’s world-wide smash “Graceland.” \nZoom Link will be provided upon registration.
