DESCRIPTION:Free and Open to the Public \n Performance\n11:30am-1:30pm\, Rebecca Stafford Student Center \nArtist’s Talk 4:30pm\,\nClub Dining Room \nAfter typing more than 2\,500 postcards to the President from dozens of campuses and other locations around the country\, Sheryl Oring’s I WISH TO SAY is coming to Monmouth to engage students in discussions about politics and social change.\nOring sets up a pop-up public office on campus–complete with a manual typewriter–and invites students to dictate postcards to the next President. \nSheryl Oring’s work examines social issues through projects that incorporate old and new media to tell stories\, examine public opinion and foster open exchange. Oring’s work has been shown at Bryant Park in New York City; the Berlin Wall Memorial; the Jewish Museum Berlin; the 01SJ Biennial in San Jose\, CA; the San Diego Museum of Art; as well as in major festivals such as Encuentro in São Paulo\, Brazil\, the Art Prospect Festival in St. Petersburg\, Russia\, and Art in Odd Places in New York City. She recently completed a large-scale public art installation at the San Diego International Airport and currently works as an Assistant Professor of Art at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Oring is the recipient of grants from Franklin Furnace and Creative Capital. Her forthcoming book Activating Democracy: The I Wish to Say Project is due out in Fall 2016 from Intellect Books/University of Chicago Press.

SUMMARY:Guest Lecture with Dr. Cesar Gonzalez: “Big Data: Practice and Applications”
DESCRIPTION:The “Big Data” phenomenon has given rise to the emerging discipline of “Data Science.” Data science combines areas from computer science\, artificial intelligence\, and statistics among others\, with the goal of extracting useful information and hidden patterns from large volumes of structured and unstructured data sources. \nThe applications of big data are numerous and go beyond their use in search engines and recommendation systems. In fact\, big data techniques are being applied in science\, health\, and even in what were traditionally considered “soft” sciences\, such as anthropology\, journalism\, etc. \nAfter defining “big data” and “data science\,” Dr. Cesar Gonzalez will present a number of examples that demonstrate the impact of big data in a number of disciplines. In the talk he also reviews the most popular computational and mathematical tools commonly used in this trade. \nDr. Gonzales\, who retired from IBM in 2012 after 29 years of service\, is currently an independent technology consultant working on topics that include Big Data. At IBM Cesar became an IBM Fellow\, an executive position and the highest technical distinction that IBM confers. His technical expertise spans the areas of wireless communications and the development of video compression algorithms and systems. Early in his IBM career\, he contributed to the development of the ubiquitous MPEG standard for digital video compression. He then led the research and development in IBM’s Digital Video Products group. His work included the development of ASICs and systems-on-a-chip for MPEG-2 encoders\, set-top boxes\, and other digital video consumer products. DESCRIPTION:The Monmouth University Urban Coast Institute will host a symposium exploring the results of a three-year comprehensive study of the health of Barnegat Bay on Tuesday\, November 10\, 2015. The event\, titled “What Lies Beneath: Barnegat Bay\,” will feature presentations by three groups of researchers who worked on the study. \nThe New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) initiated the study to determine the sources and extent of environmental problems in the bay\, and identify actions that could be taken to slow and ultimately reverse the bay’s decline. DESCRIPTION:Why are there so many Jewish comedians? When Comedy Went to School answers this question with an entertaining portrait of this country’s greatest generation of comics – the generation that includes the likes of Jerry Lewis\, Sid Caesar\, Jackie Mason\, Mort Sahl\, and Jerry Stiller – all of whom make appearances in the film\, telling jokes and telling their stories. The answer is also found in upstate New York’s Catskill Mountains\, aka the Borscht Belt\, where Jewish immigrants transformed lush farmland into the 20th century’s largest resort complex. Thos Catskill hotels and bungalow colonies provided the setting for a remarkable group of young Jewish-American comedians to hone their craft and become worldwide legends.
